BWW Review: Gen Y's BAT BOY is a Nearly Perfect Halloween Production
by Matt Tamanini
- Oct 16, 2015
There's really no getting around it, BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL is weird, albeit wonderfully so. It's an audacious musical comedy ripped from the headlines of a supermarket tabloid. Inspired by the on-going Weekly World News articles that began with 1992's 'Bat Child Found in Cave!,' the musical tells the story of a half-bat/half-boy creature feared and tormented by close-minded townsfolk, despite the fact that all he wants to do is learn to be human and find a home. Musicals don't get much weirder than that. But, it is for this very reason that Gen Y Productions has become the most exciting theatre company in Orlando in less than a year of operation. Not only are they willing to do shows that are outside the scope of traditional companies, but they also do them extremely well. BAT BOY, a cult favorite since it debuted Off-Broadway in 2001, is far from a perfect show, but Gen Y's version, directed by Kenny Howard and running through Halloween at The Abbey, just might be as perfect of a production as possible.
Geoff Hoyle's LEAR'S SHADOW Extends at The Marsh
by Tyler Peterson
- May 22, 2015
The Marsh has announced award-winning actor/playwright Geoff Hoyle's newest solo show Lear's Shadow will extend, with continuing performances through June 27. It may be business-as-usual when great tragedians such as Laurence Olivier, Sir Ian McKellen, and Paul Scofield perform in King Lear, but this time a great clown tackles Shakespeare's masterpiece. Audiences experience King Lear like never before as the Jester (played by Hoyle), recently unemployed, tells his side to Shakespeare's most tragic, cosmic, and human of stories in this poignant solo performance. Lear's Shadow, written in collaboration with and directed by the master of the solo form David Ford, will run Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8pm and Saturdays at 5pm through May 30. Beginning June 4, Lear's Shadow will be performed Thursdays at 8pm and Saturdays at 5pm at The Marsh (1062 Valencia Street, San Francisco). For tickets ($20-$100), the public may visit www.themarsh.org or call 415-282-3055 between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
BWW Reviews: Cabaret at The Abbey - Party Until the Lights Go Out
by Justin J Sacramone
- Jan 31, 2015
Artful Events and Gen Y Productions partner to bring Orlando audiences Cabaret at The Abbey. Sitting comfortably in the venue of this space, Cabaret feels so intimate that it makes me wonder why it took so long for Cabaret to be mounted in this venue.
