Angela Lansbury and Friends (and what incredible friends she has!), an all-star salute to Terrence McNally, has been announced for Monday, March 28, 2011 at the Longacre Theatre at 7 pm. A benefit for The Acting Company, Ms. Lansbury has gathered Audra McDonald, Alan Cumming, Tyne Daly, Edie Falco, Roger Rees and Raul Esparza who will sing, share memories and recreate scenes from dozens of McNally hits. John Glover, Marin Mazzie, Joyce DiDonato, Malcolm Gets, Emily Skinner, Alexandra Silber, Bobby Steggert, Jason Danieley and Stephen Bogardus will round out the evening.
This year's 56th Annual Drama Desk Awards, scheduled to take place in May, will undergo a major overhaul designed to enhance its national visibility and outreach and provide all segments of New York Theater a larger national footprint than ever before. Announcement of those changes were made public yeterday, February 24, at a News Conference in the Inc Lounge. As reported, one of these changes includes the televising of the ceremony on Ovation, hosted by Harvey Fierstein.
First reported by BroadwayWorld.com last night and now with confirmed dates, THE NORMAL HEART is headed back to Broadway with previews beginning on April 19th and an opening set for April 27, 2011 at the Golden Theatre.
BroadwayWorld has learned that just before the 2010-2011 season comes to a close, Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart will open on Broadway at the Golden Theater starring Cheyenne Jackson, Joe Mantello and Ellen Barkin. Following an Actor's Fund benefit performance of the show starring Mantello and Glenn Close this past fall, rumors began swirling that Daryl Roth was hot to ressurect the property into a full-scale production - it's first on Broadway. Securing an available theater had apparently held up her efforts. it is believed that Mantello will reprise his role as Ned Weeks. Jackson will play his lover Felix Turner and Barkin will assume the role of Dr. Emma Brookner.
New York native and stage and screen star, Brooke Shields, made her solo cabaret debut on Tuesday, February 1 at Feinstein's at Loews Regency. Under the direction of Mark Waldrop, Ms. Shields presents In My Life, an intimate look into the life of the actress, from her early days as the 'Ivory Soap baby' to now. She shares stories from her incredible journey in show business in an evening that features some of her favorite pop songs, those from previous Broadway appearances, and selections from the upcoming Broadway musicals, Leap of Faith and Ever After. Barbara Cook's American Songbook performance, previously scheduled for January 12, has been postponed to allow the singer to recover from a medical procedure to remove a hernia. Ms. Cook will now perform on Tuesday, February 15, at 8:30 in The Allen Room.
Today we are taking a look and a listen to the biggest and brightest Broadway beacons of the year that was, all amidst the dismal landscape of the Street as we now know it, though I won't name names or titles (hyphenated or otherwise). Between the ultimate diva triptych of Barbra, Liza and Cher each releasing not only new albums in 2010, but also DVDs of their work - and, in Cher's case, a smash-hit big-screen original movie musical, BURLESQUE, to the stars-on-the-rise of two leading men of far off shores - Stuart Matthew Price and David Campbell. In a year with far too few new cast albums, these solo albums certainly shine with lots of luster. On Broadway it might have been the year of epic disaster, but on record we may be able to find the Broadway we knew and loved once in any number of these highly-recommended releases. Oh, yeah - and Sondheim, too!
