Jeremy Lawrence, best-known for creating and starring in several one-man shows which explore Tennessee Williams in the playwright's own words, revives his acclaimed play with music 'LAVENDER SONGS: A QUEER WEIMAR BERLIN CABARET' which features songs performed or written by queer and Jewish kabarettists of the era in English versions by Jeremy Lawrence.
Lawrence, as his alter ego Tante Fritzi, invites the audience into his edgy, gender-bender, sexy world. It is a chilling evocation of the subversive world of Berlin's cabarets and a celebration of the daring of its Jewish and queer artists who continued to mock and deride the ever-lengthening shadow of fascism for as long as they could. 'Lavender Songs,' directed by Jason Jacobs, stars Jeremy Lawrence as 'Tante Fritzi' with Ariela Bohrod at the piano. Performances are Mondays, October 22, 29 and November 5 at 7 PM at Pangea, 178 Second Avenue (between 11th and 12th Streets.) There is a $20 cover charge with a $20 food/drink minimum. Reservations can be made at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3596340
Downtown supper-club Pangea is gearing up for the momentous events coming up in November with a number of shows from some of our signature artists that remind us how important it is to treat each other with dignity and fairness. In October the East Village Mecca for cutting edge cabaret, song and performance, which The NY Times calls, "a bohemian oasis not unlike the fabled Max's Kansas City from days gone by," presents premieres by Tammy Faye Starlite, Salty Brine, and Rachelle Garniez. In honor of National Constitution Day, Maya Ciarrocchi will hold an eight-hour reading of the United States Constitution, read in multiple languages by over 25 artists.
Many New York cabaret performers have tackled the songbook of the iconic Joni Mitchell, but few have put the kind of transformative twist on it the way Remy Block did when she performed On a Lonely Road: Travelin' with Joni between 2014-2015 at Don't Tell Mama and The Duplex. Block's tribute to the legendary pop singer/songwriter was a personal exploration of a young woman's life as a seeker, a lover, and an artist, with Mitchell's tunes serving as the "sacred text and rough guide" for her journey. Cabaret show reviewers raved about Remy's take on Joni's songs. Now, Remy Block is bringing a revised version of On a Lonely Road: Travelin' with Joni to PANGEA (178 2nd Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets) on November 7 at 9:30 pm and December 8 at 7 pm.

Raquel Cion's critically acclaimed cabaret show Me and Mr Jones: My Intimate Relationship with David Bowie, has it's final performance of the current run at The Slipper Room on Sunday (May 15) at 8 pm. Cion has been working throughout NYC as an actor, director, and singer for the past 20 years, and has won accolades for her evocative performances. Since she was a teenager, Cion has had a deep, abiding, reverential love for the musician David Bowie, which she incandescently brings to light in this show, as much a one-woman Off-Broadway presentation with a band as a cabaret show. I recently met with Cion at the Chocolate Room in Brooklyn, and true to form, Cion ordered a vanilla milkshake, laughing at her tendency to swim against the current. We discussed her creative and emotional process for initially creating the Bowie show, and then changing the show on the fly after her beloved Bowie died this past January at 69.
When the entertainment website BroadwayWorld.com announced its 2015 New York Cabaret Award nominees for "Best Alt Cabaret Show," Raquel Cion-hailed by The New York Times as "half witch and half cabaret performer"-was named a finalist for her stunning performances in Me & Mr. Jones: My Intimate Relationship with David Bowie, a show that generated standing ovations from SRO crowds at The Slipper Room, 167 Orchard Street. After Bowie's death in January, Cion decided to bring back a revised version of Me & Mr. Jones . . . for a three-show run that concludes at the popular Lower East Side burlesque/variety club on May 15 at 8 pm.
'In his world, I find myself,' Raquel Cion pronounces with almost oracular force in her one-woman show, Me & Mr. Jones: My Intimate Relationship with David Bowie (performed on April 21 at The Slipper Room on the Lower East Side). The Connecticut-raised performer and director received a 2015 Broadway World nomination for 'Best Musical Comedy or Alt Cabaret Show' for her brave and intensely personal exploration of the musical legend through whose work she plots the arc of her life over a 35-year period.
When late last year BroadwayWorld.com announced its 2015 New York Cabaret Award nominees for "Best Alt Cabaret Show," Raquel Cion was named a finalist for her stunning show Me & Mr. Jones: My Intimate Relationship with David Bowie for performances that generated standing ovations from SRO crowds at The Slipper Room, 167 Orchard Street. After Bowie's death in January, Cion decided to bring back a revised version of Me & Mr. Jones . . . to the popular Lower East Side burlesque/variety club, for a three-show run that launched on March 24 and will continue with shows at The Slipper Room on April 21 and May 15 at 8 pm.
After performances that generated standing ovations from SRO crowds, and subsequently earned a 2015 BroadwayWorld.com New York Cabaret Award nomination for "Best Alt Cabaret Show," Raquel Cion is bringing Me & Mr. Jones: My Intimate Relationship with David Bowie back to The Slipper Room, the popular burlesque/variety club on New York's Lower East Side (167 Orchard Street), for a three-show run beginning Thursday, March 24 at 8 pm (with additional shows on April 21 and May 15, also 8 pm).
