The Studio Theatre follows up its 2008 hit production of The History Boys with Alan Bennett's next play, The Habit of Art. Deep in the bowels of London's National Theatre, rehearsals for a new play go apace: Benjamin Britten is having trouble with his latest opera and seeks out his collaborator, poet W. H. Auden, after a twenty-five year separation. Between visits by a rent boy and a biographer-whom Auden briefly mistakes for the rent boy-these aging artists wrestle with their desires, their jealousies, the ephemeral connection between creativity and inspiration, and all the reasons their friendship fell apart.
The new DC area theatre season begins in September. Over 50 shows are opening in our professional and community theatres. But before we move on to the new season and what's opening in September, let's look back at my personal favorite musicals, plays, and performances in both musicals and plays in the DC area - from August 2010 to August 2011.

This past Saturday, July 23, Randy Harrison (Queer as Folk) and the entire cast and crew of Broadway's Chicago attended SILENCE! The Musical, Off-Broadway's newest smash hit, at Theatre 80. The 10:30 PM performance was particularly electric as Charlotte d'Amboise and the other Chicago cast members broke out into cheers and applause every time SILENCE's leading lady (Jenn Harris) executed her Fosse moves, as devised by director/choreographer Christopher Gattelli. Harrison and the Chicago company happily posed for onstage photos afterwards with Brent Barrett, Jenn Harris and the entire SILENCE! cast.
Michael Cyril Creighton's award winning online sitcom 'JACK IN A BOX' about a frustrated theatre box office manager, currently in its third season, celebrates its 2 Year Anniversary and releases the 23rd episode of the series, entitled 'The Date.' After 2 years of watching Jack be a sort of snarky, hapless sad sack, it's possible this little dough boy has found love. Or will he ruin it, just like he ruined that audition to play an Adult Baby on Law & Order: SVU? The episode features downtown theatre favorites Paul Thureen (The Debate Society) and Becky Yamamoto (Young Jean Lee's Songs of the Flying Dragon to Heaven).
