BWW Interview: Ingrid Michaelson Finds Her Way to Broadway by the Light of THE GREAT COMET

Ingrid Michaelson has more than one reason to celebrate this summer.
Following the release of her latest EP, Alter Egos, the multi-platinum recording artist is calling the Imperial Theatre home, playing Sonya in the Tony Award-winning musical NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812. Michaelson's trip to Imperial Russia will be brief, as the songstress will only be performing the role through August 15, while Brittain Ashford, who originated the role takes a temporary leave from the show.

In 1928, Ruth Snyder was executed for the murder of her husband; that same year, Sophie Treadwell wrote Machinal, inspired by Snyder's story. Now, playwright Steph Del Rosso has crafted a relentless, raucous exploration of feminism - part rock concert, part performance art - inspired by Treadwell's expressionist masterpiece. This production, created for the IDEAS Festival 2017 in San Diego and subsequently presented at Ubuntu Theater in the Bay Area, lands at JACK under the direction of rising theater-maker Will Detlefsen.

Multi-platinum recording artist Ingrid Michaelson has joined the cast of Broadway's Tony Award-winning musical NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 as Sonya. Michaelson will be performing the role from July 3 to August 15, while Brittain Ashford, who originated the role of 'Sonya' takes a temporary leave from the show. Ashford will return to THE GREAT COMET on August 16. Ingrid Michaelson will not be performing August 2 through August 6.

The YALE INSTITUTE FOR MUSIC THEATRE (Mark Brokaw, Artistic Director) announces the creative teams and casting for the two original book musicals, COWBOY BOB, created by Molly Beach Murphy, Jeanna Phillips, and Annie Tippe, book by Molly Beach Murphy, music and lyrics by Jeanna Phillips; and GUMBO, music by Brett Macias and book and lyrics by Christina Quintana, conceived by Brett Macias and Christina Quintana, which are being developed in an intensive two-week summer lab at Yale School of Drama, June 13-24. Scott Frankel is the Artistic Advisor, and Catherine Sheehy is the resident Dramaturg for this year's Institute, which culminates with open rehearsal readings of each project, presented as part of New Haven's International Festival of Arts & Ideas on June 23 and 24.
