Punch Brothers and Sarah Jarosz to Play Celebrate Brooklyn!, 7/9

BRIC is pleased to announce that Punch Brothers will headline a free concert at the Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival (Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th St. & Prospect Park West), which is presented by Squarespace, on Thursday, July 9. The concert, free to the public (with a suggested $3 contribution at the gate), begins at 7:30 P.M. with an opening performance by mandolin prodigy and singer-songwriter Sarah Jarosz.

TDF Open Doors Graduation Set for Next Monday

Over 400 guests including current and past New York City high school students, and the performing arts professional mentors who have participated in TDF's Open Doors, the theatre arts mentoring program that TDF founded in 1998 with playwright Wendy Wasserstein, will attend this year's graduation at 5:30pm on Monday, June 1 at The Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College (524 West 59th Street, NYC).   TDF's Open Doors was the first arts education program to receive a special Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre when it received the special honor in 2012. This year, Open Doors had 30 mentors working with 24 groups of students from New York City high schools.

BRIC Sets 2015 Celebrate Brooklyn! Lineup

BRIC is pleased to announce the lineup for its 37th annual Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival, which will comprise 29 performances, June 3 - August 12. The programming, reflective of Brooklyn's eclecticism and diversity, will feature a wide array of free, world-class performances in the singular environs of the Prospect Park Bandshell.

Today, April 18th, TDF will host a special reception and performance of The Heidi Chronicles to celebrate the show's Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein, and to raise funds for the arts education program she co-founded, TDF's Open Doors. Open Doors, now in its 17th year, is the first arts education program to be awarded a special Tony Honor for 'Excellence in the Theatre.'

Performance Artist Laurie Anderson to Receive 2015 Yaddo Artist Medal; Steve Buscemi to Host Benefit

Yaddo has announced that the second annual Yaddo Artist Medal will be presented to influential avant-garde composer and performance artist Laurie Anderson at its New York City Benefit on Monday, June 1, 2015. The event at the Tribeca Rooftop (2 Desbrosses St.) will be hosted by actor/director Steve Buscemi and Kate Valk of The Wooster Group. Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar, Obie Award winner Eisa Davis, and Obie Award winner Young Jean Lee-all Yaddo Artists-will perform.

Chaka Khan to Open 37th Annual Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival

BRIC has announced that legendary soul singer Chaka Khan will open the 37th annual Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival, with a free concert June 3 at the Prospect Park Bandshell. Dubbed the "Queen of Funk," Chaka has stunned artists, audiences and critics alike over her 40-year career. She brings her unbridled talent to the Bandshell, continuing BRIC's longstanding tradition of presenting an eclectic mix of artists at the forefront of their field, all within the singular environs of Prospect Park. Previous Festival openers have included cultural luminary David Byrne, reggae icon Jimmy Cliff and pop sensation Janelle Monae, among many others.

BRIC Honors 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

On July 11 at the Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival, BRIC will honor the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with Vote, It Ain't Illegal Yet!, a special multimedia concert directed by author/filmmaker/journalist Nelson George. The evening, presented Squarespace, will include contributions from Burning Spear, Vernon Reid, Maya Azucena, Roger Guenveur Smith, Carl Hancock Rux, Ramya Ramana and more. D-Nice provides musical direction. The concert, which begins at 7:30 P.M. with a performance by Fredericks Brown, is free to the public (with a suggested $3 contribution at the gate).

2014 Columbia University Film Festival to Run 5/2-8

Columbia University School of the Arts Film Program and the Film Society of Lincoln Center will co-present the 27thAnnual Columbia University Film Festival (CUFF), a weeklong program of screenings, dramatic readings and special events in New York. The celebration will continue with events to be announced for June 17-20 in Los Angeles. This marks the third year that the Festival is co-presented by the Film Society.

Noteworthy Hosts Panel with Awkafina, Erin Markey & More at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe Tonight

Noteworthy's Singer/Songwriter panel discussion celebrates the careers of four powerful female artists writing, recording and performing live music in the fields of hip-hop, musical theater, electropop, rock and R&B. The panel will take place tonight, July 25 at 7 p.m. at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe (126 Crosby Street). Panelists include YouTube rap diva Awkafina, multi-platinum recording artist Wynter Gordon, outre cabaret and theater sensation Erin Markey and alt-electropop explorer Xenia Rubinos. Media critic Elisabeth Vincentelli of The New York Post will moderate.
