Due to critical and popular demand, Off-Broadway's eleven-time Obie Award-winning Soho Rep will extend the U.S. premiere of debbie tucker green's BORN BAD by two weeks, now through May 7th, 2011 at Soho Rep (46 Walker Street), it has been announced by Soho Rep Artistic Director Sarah Benson. The Manhattan Theatre Club opened the New York Premiere of THE WHIPPING MAN, the acclaimed new play by Matthew Lopez, directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes, last night, February 1. This week, top theatrical talent paid tribute to playwright Lynn Nottage, recipient of the 2010 ‘Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award', presented by The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust. Scenes highlighting Ms. Nottage's work (including Ruined, Intimate Apparel and a preview of her upcoming By The Way, Meet Vera Stark) were performed by actors Quincy Tyler Bernstine (In the Next Room), two-time Tony Award-winner and Oscar-nominee Viola Davis (Fences, King Hedley II), Kimberly Hébert Gregory (The Brother/Sister Plays), Russell Hornsby (Intimate Apparel), Tony Award-winner Karen Olivo (West Side Story, In the Heights) and Condola Rashad (Ruined). Ruined, a co-production with Seattle's Intiman Theatre, is the most acclaimed play of 2009 garnering best play honors with a Lucille Lortel Award, Obie Award, New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Awards, and the inaugural Horton Foote Prize for Outstanding New American Play, in addition to the Pulitzer Prize for drama. Directed by Intiman Theatre Artistic Director Kate Whoriskey, who helmed the acclaimed original production, the company includes Quincy Tyler Bernstine (Salima), Cherise Boothe (Josephine), Russell G. Jones (Christian) and Condola Rashad (Sophie), all of whom originated their roles in the Goodman Theatre/Manhattan Theatre Club world-premiere production, and Portia, who took over the leading role of Mama Nadi during the extended run in New York.
