Adapted and directed by interdisciplinary theatre artist Gwen Dobie, Theatre @ York's Beggar's Opera (http://finearts.yorku.ca/beggarsopera) previews January 28, opens January 29 and runs to February 1. It unfolds as a play within a play with a decidedly modern vibe, bringing the audience into the action. The show transforms York University's Sandra Faire & Ivan Fecan Theatre into the Lincoln Fields Correctional Institute, where visitors are subjected to 21st century surveillance measures to witness the 'inmates' performing within. For many, if not most, plays and musicals are an escape. It is a way for audience members to lose themselves in the dark of the theater and in the lives of the people on stage. Plays are, for them, just entertainment, a way to connect with other human beings and feel what they feel, laugh or cry along with them. Then go home and forget all about it. That is not the case with the plays of German dramatist Bertolt Brecht, whose play The Threepenny Opera is currently running at The Wilbury Theatre Group.
Atlantic Theater Company has announced four of its 2013-2014 season productions, featuring world premiere plays from Academy Award-winning film maker Ethan Coen and Tony Award nominated playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, the American premiere of Roy Williams' stage adaptation of a classic Alan Sillitoe story and a revival of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's musical The Threepenny Opera staged by acclaimed director and choreographer Martha Clarke.

There is a reason that colleges across the US love to do this musical - it's a fun, raunchy social satire, unfortunately Miners Alley played it a little too safe in their interpretation of this naughty production.
