BWW Reviews: GERTRUDE STEIN SAINTS at the Fringe Turns Avant-Garde Opera into Glee (in a Good way)

Dressed all in white, singing like angels and dancing like the devil, the 13 performers of "Gertrude Stein's Saints" are young, energetic, talented, and, let's face it, hot enough to be cast in Glee. What's most remarkable about this ensemble, all of them drama students at Carnegie Mellon University, is that, instead of covering songs by Journey or Rihanna, they have composed original music and turned two inaccessible avant-garde operas into a rousing entertainment.

Every once in a while, a movie comes along that sticks with a generation and 'Art Story' is that movie. As the characters venture around this imaginative world, the audience will be mesmerized by the places they go, and fall in love with the painted characters they meet. BWW Reviews: BALANCHINE AND THE LOST MUSE: REVOLUTION AND THE MAKING OF A CHOREOGRAPHER by ELIZABETH KENDALL

George Balanchine (1904-1983) is considered the greatest choreographer of the 20th century, his transforming genius in dance often compared to that of Mozart and Stravinsky in music and Picasso and Cezanne in art. Born Georgi Balanchivadze in Czarist Russia, he fled the country of his birth for the West in 1924. After working with Diaghilev's fabled Ballets Russes, he came to the United States in 1933, and with Lincoln Kirstein founded the School of American Ballet and the New York City Ballet. Through his many works Balanchine crafted an American style of neoclassical ballet that changed the world of dance.

BWW Reviews: Bruce Sherman Studio Visit - The Artist, the Ceramicist and the Man by Barry Kostrinsky

Bruce Sherman's drawings evolve and flow; as he breathes it breathes. This may sound like child play but it takes a quiet mind to open up to a free unguided hand,. Remember that Picasso quote, “ It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.” Sherman's clay work has an organic feel. The forms seem to be almost happening as if they were created softly, developed by a soft hand reaching for the form to reveal itself and not to be ordered and directed. The material is often slab left overs, remnant rogue clay not fashioned for play this way or that, a gap in the note, a space for the music.
