The Tony Award-winning revival of HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical returns to Broadway tonight at the St. James Theatre. The 10-week only ‘Summer of Love' run will conclude on September 10, 2011.

New York's Public Theater announced today that the Tony Award-winning revival of HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, which returns to Broadway for a 10-week only ‘Summer of Love' run, is going back to its free theatre roots by giving away 100 tickets for the show's first performance on Tuesday, July 5th to the first 100 lucky fans in line at the St. James Theatre. Tickets (1 per person) will be distributed at 1:00 PM on July 5. Fans waiting in line are encouraged to dress in their best HAIR inspired hippie attire; just before tickets are distributed at 1:00 PM, cast members will select the best dressed male and female winners, who will win a walk-on role in a future performance of HAIR, along with five tickets so that their family and friends can watch them join the tribe. Tickets may be anywhere in the theatre and are non-transferrable. HAIR will officially open at the St. James Theatre on Wednesday, July 13th and play through September 10, 2011.

HAIR first played on Broadway in the 60s and it was, without question, one of my very favorite musicals. I saw it three times. I recall that the then New York Times critic Clive Barnes was quoted as saying 'If you Have One Musical To See, Make it HAIR.' His quote was pretty close to that, anyway. I don't think I agreed with Mr. Barnes then, but HAIR is surely a joyous musical, full of memorable songs, and a 'tribe' of performers you simply want to be part of.

Hair, playing at the Durham Performing Arts Center through Sunday, is a wonderfully trippy tribute to the heyday of the hippie movement. Of course, to call Hair a tribute might diminish the power of this musical's position in the pantheon of the American musicals.

The 2009 Tony Award-winning Musical Revival HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical directed by Diane Paulus is headed back to Broadway for a limited run at the St. James Theater (currently home to AMERICAN IDIOT). The show will play from July 5 - September 10, before heading back onto the road. The overall experience of seeing 'Hair' is exhilarating, as if some pent-up emotion lying dormant for decades is finally being let out into the air, but this revival feels inauthentic, a little like the Disney ride version of the decade and cultural upheaval that changed our society in so many important ways.

The Public Theater's new Tony-winning production of HAIR is now on tour, will next play Boston's Colonial Theatre March 21- April 10. HAIR won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival as well as the Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical. The HAIR cast recording was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical is playing its last performance at the Marcus Center on February 27. This Milwaukee engagement is presented by Broadway Across America-Milwaukee and the Marcus Center as part of the Time Warner Cable Broadway at the Marcus Center Series.

First produced in 1967 by Joe Papp at his Public Theatre, eventually opening on Broadway in 1968, Hair is about the hippie generation of the 60s, whose drugs and flower-power may have been a controversial mishmash then, but now make more sense than ever; the message rings loud and clear: stop the war! There's another message underneath: trust yourself and live the life you want to live, as long as you're not hurting others! Sad to say, 40+ years later, senseless war still rages and most people live by the status quo, even if its stress is so overbearing, it practically kills them. This new touring production, based on the 2009 Tony Award winning revival, is a powerful reminder and a powerhouse winner.
