GYPSY OF THE YEAR Raises 3.7+ Million for BC/EFA; PROMISES, JERSEY BOYS Lead Winners Board!

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS has just wrapped the 22nd Annual GYPSY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION at the New Amsterdam Theatre. The competition began yesterday, December 6. The proceeds from the event, a dazzling once-a-year variety show filled with lavish musical numbers, original skits and Broadway stars, will benefit BC/EFA. This year's GYPSY OF THE YEAR was hosted by Broadway personality Seth Rudetsky ('Seth's Big Fat Broadway' on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio).
The results are in and the grand total raised for BC/EFA amongst Broadway, Off-Broadway and touring shows is $3,776,720!

Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS is pleased to announce that the legendary Carol Channing will perform in the opening number of the 22ND ANNUAL GYPSY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION. Tickets are on sale now for this year's GYPSY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION which will be held on Monday, December 6 (4:30 PM) and Tuesday, December 7 (2 PM) at the New Amsterdam Theatre (214 West 42nd Street).

A winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and a national treasure, Chita Rivera made her annual pilgrimage to Birdland for four very special concerts this past weekend. Of course, the theatrical community showed up to celebrate the ultimate singer/dancer, including Cherry Jones, Stephanie J. Block, Phyllis Newman, Tommy Tune, John McDaniel, David Cromer, Hunter Ryan Herdlicka, Billy Stritch, Rob Bowman, Louis St. Louis, Gerald McCullouch, Valarie Pettiford, Erich Bergen, Eric Ulloa, and Women on the Verge cast members Laura Benanti, Nikka Lanzarone, Justin Guarini, and Mary Beth Peil. The concerts were part of the Broadway at Birdland series, which celebrate performers and composers from the Great White Way.

Bells Are Ringing, the opening Encores! production of the 2010-11 season, features music by Jule Styne and book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. The show ran November 18-21 at New York City Center. Bells Are Ringing is directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall with music direction by Rob Berman and stars Kelli O'Hara and Will Chase. 'Sondheim: The Birthday Concert' PBS Special Gets Nov. 16 Release

As BroadwayWorld has reported, The New York Philharmonic's SONDHEIM: The Birthday Concert, which took place on March 15-16, 2010 at Avery Fisher Hall, will be broadcast on THIRTEEN'S Great Performances on PBS on Wednesday, November 24 (check local listings). WNET, Channel 13 in New York City, will air the concert at 9:30 p.m. that evening. Today, it has been revealed that the Image Entertainment will release the program DVD and Blu-Ray on November 16, 2010.
The concert includes songs and orchestral pieces from Sondheim musical theater favorites such as Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, Into the Woods, and Sunday in the Park with George. Today, it has been announced that in addition to the PBS telecast, the concert will be released on DVD in November by Image Entertainment.

Two more casts have added their voices to Broadway's Carols for a Cure, the annual holiday music CD benefiting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA). Promises, Promises cast members sing 'Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel,' and Joey Curatolo, who plays Paul McCartney in RAIN - A Tribute To The Beatles On Broadway, wrote and recorded an original song 'Wishing You a Very Merry Christmas.'
