The School of American Ballet's 2015 Winter Ball took place at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater on Monday, March 9, 2015 and raised more than $1.39 million for scholarships and school programs. Legendary French jeweler, Van Cleef & Arpels sponsored the glamorous, black-tie dinner dance for the eighth consecutive year. The evening began with cocktails at 7pm and dinner at 8pm, followed by a student performance choreographed specially for the occasion, and The Encore dessert and dancing. The proceeds from this event enhance every aspect of the School's extraordinary ballet training program, helping to provide more than $1.9 million annually in student scholarships, as well as supporting faculty, maintaining world-class studios and offering vital student programs beyond the classroom.
Dance Theatre of Harlem and Alvin Ailey dance star Mel A.Tomlinson joins Dancers Over 40 tribute of Chicago Ballet superstar Ruth Page in the tribute, 'A World Apart' at St. Luke's Theatre, 308 West 46th St., NYC at 7PM. A dance innovator who refused to be pigeon-holed into just one type of dance, Ruth was the first American to dance with Diaghilev'€s Ballets Russes in 1925, first American to dance with Anna Pavlova's company, first to commission George Balanchine to choreograph and the first to present Rudolf Nurevev in America. Prokofiev, Gershwin and Ravel played for her, Isamu Noguchi designed her costumes and she commissioned Aaron Coplandâ€s first ballet score. She dedicated her life to making dance and ballet accessible to everyone. Ruth's work on Broadway includes her professional stage debut in Jerome Kern and Victor Herbertâ€s Miss 1917, a leading role in Irving Berlin's Music Box Revue 1923-24 edition, and choreographing 1947's Music in My Heart. A double-bill of her famous opera ballets Revenge and The Merry Widow had a six-day a sell-out run at the Broadway Theater in 1955.

I've never been a fan of Peter Martins' choreography so I was surprised to find myself moved by the "balcony pas de deux" in Romeo + Juliet, his adaptation for the New York City Ballet of Shakespeare's tragic tale about star-crossed lovers. Sterling Hyltin as Juliet and Robert Fairchild as Romeo, returning to the roles they originated when the ballet had its premiere in 2007, used the beautiful but difficult intertwinings and lifts to convey their youthful passion in a way that was entirely believable to me.
The recipients of the 2015 Martin E. Segal Awards, this year, expanded to encompass nominees from all of Lincoln Center's resident organizations, were announced today by Lincoln Center President Jed Bernstein. New York City Ballet will present the third installation of its acclaimed Art Series initiative during the Company's 2015 Winter Season. Launched in 2013, the New York City Ballet Art Series features annual collaborations between NYCB and contemporary visual artists who create original works inspired by NYCB for exhibition at the Company's home, the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. For the 2015 Art Series, NYCB has commissioned an installation from Dustin Yellin, the Brooklynbased artist and founder of Red Hook's Pioneer Works. Yellin's body of work, which includes paintings, drawings, installation, performance and sculpture, has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries in New York, as well as internationally.
New York City Ballet will open its 2015 Winter season on Tuesday, January 20, with a week of ballets by the Company's co-founding choreographers George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, and current Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins. Included are two all-Balanchine programs -- one consisting of Serenade, Agon, and Symphony in C; and one consisting of Donizetti Variations, La Valse, and Chaconne. New York City Ballet announced today that Andrew Litton has been named the Company's next Music Director. Litton, who currently serves as Music Director of both Norway's Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Denver's Colorado Symphony Orchestra, will become NYCB's Music Director Designate, effective immediately, and will begin his first season as the Company's Music Director next September for the start of NYCB's 2015-16 season.
