American Theatre Wing Accepting Applications for 2011 Jonathan Larson Grants; Due 9/1

The American Theatre Wing announced today that applications are now being accepted for the 2011 Jonathan Larson® Grants. The grants, given annually to honor emerging composers, lyricists and book writers, help to continue Tony® Award-winning composer Jonathan Larson's dream of infusing musical theatre with a contemporary, joyful, urban vitality.

Grammy Award winners Desmond Child and Julie Gold join New York songwriters in creating world-premier works to be performed by Broadway stars, like Tony-Award winner Alice Ripley and Ariana Grande (Nickelodeon's Victorious), to celebrate, raise awareness and funding for Broadway in South Africa (BSA), at its third annual benefit concert. It will take place on Monday, October 4, 2010, at 7:30 pm in the Manhattan Center's Grand Ballroom, located at 311 West 34th Street. This year's honoree is producer Michael Butler, one of the most successful theatrical producers, lauded for bringing HAIR to Broadway in 1968, and an active proponent of youth creating positive global social change.

The deadline for applications for the fifth annual Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project on Northwestern University's Evanston campus from Aug. 1 to 7 has been extended. All applications must now be postmarked no later than May 28, 2010.

The American Theatre Wing Presented the 2010 Jonathan Larson® Grants on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the American Airlines Theatre in New York City. This year, Peter Lerman, Daniel Maté, and songwriting team Michael Kooman (music) and Christopher Dimond (book & lyrics) were selected to receive the prestigious grants, totaling $10,000. The evening included special performances of the recipients' work by Brian d'Arcy James and Kerry Butler. Brad Bass, John Eric Parker, and Ephraim Sykes from Memphis performed a rarely heard Jonathan Larson song. BroadwayWorld was there for the ceremony.

After considering 165 applications, Peter Lerman, Daniel Mate, and songwriting team Michael Kooman (music) and Christopher Dimond (book & lyrics) were selected to receive the prestigious grants, totaling $10,000. They will be honored at a presentation on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at Touch (240 W52 St.) in New York City.
