Metropolitan Opera Guild Celebrates 75th Anniversary in 2011

It is a season of momentous anniversaries for the Metropolitan Opera Guild: the Guild began the season-long celebration of its 75th anniversary this fall; as publisher of Opera News, the Guild celebrates the magazine's own diamond anniversary in 2011; and the January issue of Opera News marks the 40th anniversary of James Levine's Metropolitan Opera debut (which was June 5, 1971, conducting Tosca). The cover feature sees Scott Rose take on the difficult task of choosing 40 highlights from Levine's 40 storied years at the Met.

MetTalks Kicks Off on September 22 With Das Rheingold

MetTalks, a series of panel discussions with the casts and creative teams of the Metropolitan Opera's new productions, will begin on September 22 with a conversation about Das Rheingold, the first installment of the Met's new Ring cycle.

Muhly Hosts Week of Choral Music on WQXR's Q2, 9/21

American composer Nico Muhly, noted for his versatility and ingenuity as much as his age, acts as a guest host on WQXR's Q2 channel this week with a focus on the choral music that has been both his passion and obsession for many years. A Good Understanding, the first to two new releases on Decca, presents Muhly's own choral compositions as performed by the Grammy-nominated Los Angeles Master Chorale under the direction of Grant Gershon. The second release, I Drink the Air Before Me, is a large-scale ballet scored for chamber orchestra and written to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Stephen Petronio Dance Company. A Good Understanding is currently available on iTunes and both releases receive full distribution on September 21, 2010 in both digital and physical formats.

The Metropolitan Opera celebrates the 40th anniversary of James Levine's company debut with James Levine: Celebrating 40 Years at the Met, two special boxed sets of 21 DVDs and 32 CDs featuring highlights from the longtime Music Director's record-breaking career with the company.

THE MET: LIVE IN HD Series Expands To 1500 Theaters And 46 Countries

The Met: Live in HD, the Metropolitan Opera's Emmy and Peabody Award-winning series of live performance transmissions into movie theaters around the world, will expand in its fifth season to 1500 theaters (an increase of 300 theaters), while adding Egypt, Portugal, and Spain to its network of now 46 participating countries.
