STAGE TUBE: On This Day for 5/19/16 - SHOW BOAT

Today in 1946, the second Broadway revival of Showboat opened at the Ziegfeld Theatre, and ran for 418 performances. Show Boat is a musical in two acts with music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It was originally produced in New York in 1927 and in London in 1928, and was based on the 1926 novel of the same name by Edna Ferber. The plot chronicles the lives of those living and working on the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River show boat, from 1880 to 1927. The show's dominant themes include racial prejudice and tragic, enduring love.

Lorraine Hansberry Awards to Honor Five Native Chicagoans

On May 24, The Lorraine Hansberry Awards, presented by Goodman Theatre Resident Director Chuck Smith and Woodie King, Jr., New Federal Theatre Artistic Director, will honor five women: Micki Grant, Lynn Hamilton, Shauneille Perry, Dr. Glory Van Scott and Camille Yarbrough.

WINE AND SPIRITS Begins 6/1 at The Playroom Theater

Red Shark Productions presents WINE AND SPIRITS, a new comedy by Thomas Ott directed by Mel Williams at The Playroom Theater (151 W.46th St.) running June 1st through 19th. Jennifer Yadav is producer. The cast features Carolyn Seiff*, Carla Briscoe*, Christine Seisler*, Zoe Anastassiou, Hailey Heisick, Ryan Salvato and Scott Zimmerman*. *(member of Actors Equity)

Goodman Theatre Kicks Off Citywide Lorraine Hansberry Celebration Today

In conjunction with a production of playwright Lorraine Hansberry's final work, The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window, Goodman Theatre presents a Lorraine Hansberry Celebration (today, April 30, through June 5), curated by Goodman Resident Director Chuck Smith.
