Will Hannagan Brings Nostalgic New Cabaret SONGS FOR JACK to The Butterfly Club
'As a kid I remember staying at my grandparents a lot. Nana baking apple slice while yelling at the television; Jacko (that's my grandpa) feeding the chooks, regaling us with stories of their youth. He'd tell us how he used to ride into Hamilton at night, kip on the freezing platform, just so he'd get to Melbourne in time to watch his sweetheart sing at the St Kilda Town Hall. Theirs was a romance that endured. Sixty years. And I only caught the tail end of it.
What I remember most was the music. The five different cast recordings of South Pacific. The tears in Jack's eyes as he listened to Some Enchanted Evening for the hundredth time. The way Paul Robeson's brooding bass could stir some recollection of her.'
Songs For Jack is a stunning work of nostalgic cabaret for a bygone era of Australian romance. Created by Will Hannagan (Affluenza, POP|Press), it is a part biographical, part anthropological look at the songs, aesthetic and storytelling of the Golden Age of musicals, revelling in their impact on both the silent generation and, hereditarily, a pop-smitten millennial.
Will Hannagan is a cabaret performer and maker of music theatre. Aussie Theatre calls him the 'prince of pop pastiche'. It is time, however, for Will to leave the bangers behind, indulge his baritone in nostalgia and tell a good old fashioned love story. Perfect for the whole family.
Songs For Jack opens on May 17th and runs for five nights only, May 17th-21st. Bookings recommended: thebutterflyclub.com.
