BMOP to Kick Off the New Year with Six Reimagined Brandenburg Concertos, 1/22/16

Boston, MA — Having just accepted the 2016 Musical America Ensemble of the Year award, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) continues its 20th anniversary season with a one-night-only concert celebrating Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. BMOP will perform the “New Brandenburgs,” six works commissioned as companion pieces to Bach's six original Brandenburg Concertos as a result of a four-year project by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. The program includes the Boston premieres of Brandenburg Gate (inspired by Brandenburg No. 2) by Paul Moravec, Muse (inspired by Brandenburg No. 3) by Christopher Theofanidis, Little Moonhead (inspired by Brandenburg No. 4) by Melinda Wagner, Sea Orpheus (inspired by Brandenburg No. 5) by Peter Maxwell Davies, and Concerto with Echoes (inspired by Brandenburg No. 6) by Aaron Jay Kernis, as well as a performance of A Brandenburg Autumn (inspired by Brandenburg No. 1) by Stephen Hartke.

Patricia Racette to Receive Merola Distinguished Alumni Award

The Merola Opera Program is pleased to recognize Merola 1988 alumna Patricia Racette with the Merola Distinguished Alumni Award in a ceremony on Monday, January 7, 2016, in San Francisco. Mannes Opera to Present Donizetti's L'ELISIR D'AMORE, Featuring Mannes Orchestra, Today

The New School's College of Performing Arts is pleased to announce that the acclaimed Mannes Opera Young Artists, led by Artistic Director Joseph Colaneri, will give two fully-staged performances of Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore with the Mannes Orchestra. Performances will take place December 11 at 7:30 pm and & December 12 at 1:30 pm at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College (524 West 59th Street, New York). Admission is $25, $10 for students/seniors, and can be purchased through ticketcentral.com.

Washington National Opera Announces Full Schedule for American Opera Initiative

WASHINGTON)—Washington National Opera (WNO) today announced details for the fourth season of the American Opera Initiative, its comprehensive commissioning program that brings contemporary American stories to the stage while fostering the talents of rising American composers and librettists. Three pairings of new opera composers and librettists—Christopher Weiss and John de los Santos, David Clay Mettens and Joshua McGuire, and Sarah Hutchings and Mark Sonnenblick—will premiere new one-act operas, each based on a contemporary American story, in a semi-staged concert performance on December 2, 2015 in the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. Composer Luna Pearl Woolf and librettist Caitlin Vincent, an alumnus of the program's second season, will present their new hour-long work Better Gods—based on the life of Queen Lili'uokalani, the last monarch of Hawaii—on January 8 and 9, 2016 in the Terrace Theater.

Wall Street Journal Theatre Critic to Make Directorial Debut at Palm Beach Dramaworks

Terry Teachout, drama critic for The Wall Street Journal, playwright, librettist, and biographer, will add another title to his impressive list of accomplishments when he makes his directorial debut next season with Palm Beach Dramaworks' production of his acclaimed play, Satchmo at the Waldorf. The piece, in which Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong reminisces about his life and career just months before his death, closes out PBD's 2015 - 2016 season.

America's Oldest Continuing Summer Chamber Music Festival, Music Mountain, continues its 86th anniversary season on Sunday, July 19th (3pm) with Enso String Quartet and Soyeon Kate Lee, piano performing Moravec, Schumann, and Dohnanyi. Also, the weekend welcomes The New Black Eagle Jazz Band on Saturday, July 18th (6:30pm) plus a pre-show dinner at The Falls Village Inn (5pm). The summer of chamber music, country, jazz, and folk concerts, plus salutes to Broadway and opera continues thru September 27th.
