Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo to Perform at Guitarfest 2016, 4/30

The celebrated Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo will appear at the Guitarfest 2016 on Saturday, April 30. Michael Newman and Laura Oltman will perform the music of Dušan Bogdanovi?, Johann Kaspar Mertz, Paul Moravec, Alfonzo Montes & Irina Kircher and Isaac Albeniz. The concert will be held at 8:00 at the Shea Center for the Performing Arts.

Minnesota Opera to Premiere THE SHINING Opera, 5/7

On May 7th, the highly anticipated world premiere of The Shining - a new opera based on Stephen King's 1977 best-selling novel - by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell, will be presented by the Minnesota Opera, at the Music Theater at the Ordway in St. Paul, Minnesota. With less than three weeks to go before the curtain rises, all 7,056 seats across The Shining's four performances are sold out and only standing room tickets remain for the production which runs through May 15th.

Do you remember that cataclysmal moment in the Stanley Kubrick film of Stephen King's “The Shining,” when Jack Nicholson axes his way through the bathroom door and says, wild-eyed, “Here's Johnny!” Well, you won't find it in King's book--or in Mark Campbell's libretto for THE SHINING, the new opera written with composer Paul Moravec and directed by Eric Simonson, opening May 7 at the Minnesota Opera as part of its New Works Initiative.

Palm Beach Dramaworks to Stage SATCHMO AT THE WALDORF

Palm Beach Dramaworks closes out its sixteenth season with Terry Teachout's funny and moving Satchmo at the Waldorf, in which the legendary Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong reminisces about and ruminates on his extraordinary life and career just months before his death in 1971. This production marks Teachout's debut as a director. Satchmo at the Waldorf opens at the Don & Ann Brown Theatre on May 13 and continues through June 12, with specially priced previews on May 11 and 12.

The celebrated Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo will appear at the Mannes School of Music's new location on Friday, March 11, 2016. Michael Newman and Laura Oltman will perform the music of Dušan Bogdanovi?, Johann Kaspar Mertz, Paul Moravec, Alfronso Montes & Irina Kircher and Isaac Albeniz. The concert will be held at 8:00pm at the Ernest C. Steifel Concert Hall, Arnhold Hall, at 55 West 13th Street.  Admission is free and open to the public. 

NYFOS Next Festival of New Songs Launches Today

New York Festival of Song's contemporary song series NYFOS Next -- dubbed 'invaluable' by The New Yorker and The New York Times -- enters its sixth season and continues its new format: a three-concert February mini-festival in the intimate state-of-the-art recital hall at OPERA America's National Opera Center. The Thursday concerts take place today, February 4, as well as February 11, and 18, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.

Court Theatre Extends SATCHMO AT THE WALDORF

Due to overwhelming demand, Court Theatre, under the leadership of Artistic Director Charles Newell and Executive Director Stephen J. Albert, announces an extension to its critically-acclaimed production of Terry Teachout's Satchmo at the Waldorf, directed by Charles Newell and featuring Barry Shabaka Henley. Satchmo at the Waldorf now runs through February 14, 2016 at Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis Avenue. BMOP Performs Six Reimagined 'New Brandenburgs' Concertos Tonight

Having just accepted the 2016 Musical America Ensemble of the Year award, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) continues its 20th anniversary season with a one-night-only concert celebrating Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. BMOP will perform the 'New Brandenburgs,' six works commissioned as companion pieces to Bach's six original Brandenburg Concertos as a result of a four-year project by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. The program includes the Boston premieres of Brandenburg Gate (inspired by Brandenburg No. 2) by Paul Moravec, Muse (inspired by Brandenburg No. 3) by Christopher Theofanidis, Little Moonhead (inspired by Brandenburg No. 4) by Melinda Wagner, Sea Orpheus (inspired by Brandenburg No. 5) by Peter Maxwell Davies, and Concerto with Echoes (inspired by Brandenburg No. 6) by Aaron Jay Kernis, as well as a performance of A Brandenburg Autumn (inspired by Brandenburg No. 1) by Stephen Hartke.

Vanessa Perez to Perform at Americas Society, 1/28

Versatile pianist Vanessa Perez to perform music by Manuel de Falla and Claude Debussy at the Americas Society on January 28 at 7pm. An accomplished performer since her concert debut at age 11, Perez will perform from her forthcoming disc Spain, out February 12 on the Steinway & Sons label.

Court Theatre Announces Cast of SATCHMO AT THE WALDORF

Court's production of Satchmo will be part of a community-wide Louis Armstrong Festival, happening in partnership with The Beverly Arts Center, The Logan Center at the University of Chicago, The Promontory, South Shore Jazz Coalition, The Louis Armstrong House Museum and the Louis Armstrong Archives at Queens College New York. This community-wide festival will help audiences deepen their understanding of Armstrong's life through musical performances, historical exhibits, symposium, talk-backs and film.
