The Making of America's Musical- 1776: The Story Behind the Story

As America celebrates its 240th Birthday today, let's talk about what is probably one of the greatest musicals ever written, and it only came about 46 years before Hamilton. 1776 dramatizes the story of how John Adams was able to persuade his colleagues to vote for American independence as well as signing the Declaration of Independence. While the musical does dramatize the most important event in American history, the story behind the musical is probably just as interesting.

Original cast members from the 1970 Broadway production of THE ROTHSCHILDS gathered together to visit the York Theatre Company's current production of ROTHSCHILD & SONS, an intimate one-act reimagining of the nine-time Tony-nominated musical with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Sherman Yellen, presented in association with Arnold Mittelman and the National Jewish Theater Foundation. Parthenia, New York's premiere viol consort, will present The Art of Persuasion - The Power of Music and Poetry , a lecture/recital and concert today, May 2, including a 4:00 PM lecture/recital and 7:00 PM concert at The Church of Saint Luke in the Fields, 487 Hudson Street in Manhattan. This is the third event of The Art of Persuasion, their 2014-15 concert series. Between performances, Parthenia will offer a walking tour of Greenwich Village, including a stop for a neighborhood dinner. A list of dining establishments will be provided to concert goers.

On Thursday, March 29 from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., P.S. 321 will bring early music specialists from the New York area to the school, where they will perform Baroque and Renaissance music throughout the hallways and classrooms during the school day.
