Aurora Theater Announces Global Age Project Winners 2/2-23

Berkeley's acclaimed Aurora Theatre Company announces the four plays chosen as winners for the Global Age Project (GAP), the company's new works initiative that promotes the creation of forward-looking theatre: The First Grade by Joel Drake Johnson; Birnham Woods by Wendy MacLeod; Right? by Dan Hoyle; and and when we awoke there was light and light by Laura Jacqmin. The selected plays will be presented as staged readings in a four-week festival at the Aurora Theatre, Mondays, February 2-23, 7:30pm, coinciding with the company's fully-staged West Coast Premiere of George Packer's provocative Lucille Lortel-winning play Betrayed (January 23-March 1).
New Play Love, Loss, And What I Wore to Feature Daly, Danner, O'Donnell, Posey & More in Benefit Evenings

Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron's new play 'Love, Loss, and What I Wore' will be given six benefit readings on Monday evenings, starting on February 2nd. The play, directed by Karen Carpenter, is about clothes and the memories they trigger. It is based on the book of the same name by Ilene Beckerman. The play is currently in development. The cast of five women will alternate each week and will be revealed at curtain time. Already set and committed to perform (based on scheduling) are: Tyne Daly, Blythe Danner, Kristen Johnston, Sarah Jones, Rosie O'Donnell, Parker Posey, Karyn Quackenbush, Rondi Reed, Kristen Schaal, Marlo Thomas, and Joyce Van Patten.

Each GAP reading will be followed by an audience discussion of the contemporary issues raised in each work. Additionally, the company announces that it has received a $20,000 grant from the Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation to support the Global Age Project. For the role of prolific nonfiction writer James Reston, Jr., the author of 13 books, including 'The Conviction of Richard Nixon: The Untold Story of the Frost/Nixon Interviews' (which recounts the author's time spent as the prime Watergate researcher on the Frost interview team), Howard would turn to Sam Rockwell.

'Tribute to Sammy Cahn' at Wilshire 9/21

The Wilshire Theatre Beverly Hills, 8440 Wilshire Boulevard; Beverly Hills, CA 90211, will open its doors to the general public on Sunday, September 21, 2008, after being closed for several months for completion of Phase I of the historic venue's Revitalization Project. Producer Robert Greenblatt announced today that 9 To 5: The Musical, based on the 20th Century Fox motion picture, will begin previews on Broadway Tuesday, March 24, 2009, and will open Thursday, April 23, 2009, at the Marriott Marquis Theatre (1535 Broadway). 9 To 5: The Musical marks the Broadway debut of seven-time Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter and musician Dolly Parton as composer and lyricist. The musical's book by Patricia Resnick is based on her original story and screenplay for the smash 1980 film comedy.
Cohen & West to Star in Churchill's 'Drunk Enough?' at The Public

The Public Theater continues its spring season with the U.S. premiere of Drunk Enough to Say I Love You?, a new play by Caryl Churchill presented in association with the Royal Court Theatre. This two-character play, directed by James Macdonald and featuring Scott Cohen and Samuel West, comes to The Public after an acclaimed run at the Royal Court in London last year. Drunk Enough to Say I Love You? will begin previews on Wednesday, March 5 and run through Sunday, April 6 with an official press opening on Sunday, March 16 at 7PM.
