Deidrie Henry returns to The Armory to star as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Lanie Robertson's riveting portrait of Holiday's life told through an imagined final performance in a small bar in South Philadelphia in 1959. Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill begins preview performances on May 26, opens on June 1, and runs through July 1 on the U.S. Bank Main Stage. Bill Fennelly returns to The Armory to direct after previously directing Gypsy, Black Pearl Sings and, most recently, Little Shop of Horrors. Deidrie Henry, who most recently played Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire at The Armory, will be joined on stage by Abdul Hamid Royal, the production's music director who also plays the role of Jimmy Powers, along with local musicians Charles Neal (drums) and Andre St. James (bass).
Jagged Little Pill began previews on Saturday, May 5 at the Loeb Drama Center and officially opened last night. The production is on stage through July 15.
Jessica Lang Dance (JLD) announced today a significant donation of $500,000 from Ann and Weston Hicks. The Hicks' leadership gift is the largest single gift the organization has received to date. This gift supports the company's growth, capacity building and organizational development, as well as touring, artistic work, and performances. The donation also comes with a challenge to other supporters of JLD to match the Hicks' gift in order to achieve a $1 million fundraising goal by the end of 2018. Nearly half of the match has been raised within two months.
GRoW @ The Wallis presents the world premiere of CRE Outreach's production of MARCHING ON- an original play written by and starring eight military veterans from Veterans Empowerment Theatre (VET), an organization dedicated to presenting a first-hand view of the soldiers' experiences in their rawest form, unfiltered by press, political, or military censorship - in a special engagement at The Wallis' Lovelace Studio Theater, on Thursday, June 28 and Friday, June 29, 2018 at 8pm. This artistic journey brings veterans' personal stories to life from boot camp to returning home, highlighting the difficulty of transitioning back into society and exposing the inner turmoil of the lasting scars, both external and internal, endured from combat. For one veteran, her transition unlocks memories that have been hidden away for years, another feels rejected because of the color of his skin, while others realize that, above all, family matters most. Though alone in their stories, these heroes come together as a unit as they search for the strength to keep marching on.

The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts announced today the 2018/2019 season, delivering ten months of groundbreaking produced and presented works in dance, music and theater from locally, nationally and internationally renowned artists and companies. The season begins September 21, 2018, marking the third year of programming under the leadership of Artistic Director Paul Crewes and Managing Director Rachel Fine and the sixth for the institution. LA's own Impro Theatre concludes their yearlong residency at The Edye at The Broad Stage, presenting a different style of their signature improvisation for one weekend, each month. For the final show in their residency, Impro Theatre will pay homage to one of America's most prolific playwrights Tennessee Williams UnScripted (June 15 - 17).
