The Artist Series Presents Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater 5/18

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, recognized by U.S. Congress as a vital American 'Cultural Ambassador to the World,' will inspire, enlighten and entertain Jacksonville at the Times Union Center's Moran Theater on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 7:30PM, continuing the celebration of the legendary Judith Jamison's 20th year as artistic director.

Natalie Douglas Celebrates Lena Horne At Birdland 5/17

Jim Caruso is proud to announce the return of seven time MAC Award winning vocalist, Natalie Douglas, in her new show, 'To Lena...A Tribute To The Lady And Her Music.' Natalie will be joined by longtime musical director and arranger - Sondheim On Sondheim's Mark Hartman - and her band of Broadway All-Stars. The show will take place on Monday, May 17 at 7pm at Birdland (315 West 44 Street, NYC). This event is part of the Broadway at Birdland concert series.

Shadow Theatre Presents SIMPLY SIMONE, 4/15-5/16

Under the masterful direction of Hugo Jon Sayles & Michael Williams (the same team behind last season's Smokey Joe's Cafe), Shadow Theatre Company brings to life child prodigy, jazz superstar, civil rights activist, and political exile Nina Simone. Using the voices of four female singers representing various stages of Nina's life and rich artistic legacy of the music icon. Songs include 'I Love You Porgy', 'The Look of Love' and 'I put a Spell on You', among others.

The Beatnik Café Perform at Richmond Shepard Theater, 6/20

The Beatnik Café: Musical Revue of the Jazz Beat Generation is scheduled to perform on June 20th at 7:30 pm. Beatnik Café will play at the 80 seat Richmond Shepard Theater (309 E 26th St. at 2nd Ave). Tickets are $25 and include one drink.

Mary J. Blige is Nina Simone in 'Nina' Biopic

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mary J. Blige will channel famed jazz singer Nina Simone in Cynthia Mort's 'Nina,' biopic. Allegedly, the film will center around the singer's relationship with her assistant, Clifton Henderson. David Oyelowo is said to be filling that role.

AILEY AT THE APOLLO Performs 5/4

Led by Artistic Director Judith Jamison, now celebrating her 20th year as artistic director, stars of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the rising young dancers of Ailey II, and gifted students from The Ailey School will perform together on Tuesday, May 4th at 7pm on the world famous Apollo stage, where stars are born and legends are made.

BWW Reviews: Tracie Thoms is Terrific in Concert at Baltimore's Center Stage

What a way to end the Center Stage Cabaret Series. Baltimore native and Baltimore School for the Arts graduate, Tracie Thoms, rocked the Head Theatre before a sell-out crowd filled with family and friends Thursday evening. Thoms made a name for herself playing the role of Joanne in the film version of Rent (and even performed with the Broadway cast) and now has a recurring role on the CBS television show , 'Cold Case.'

Wigs, weaves and pop culture! Unicorn Theatre closes out the 36th season of BOLD NEW PLAYS with a funny and poignant 'blowout' of African-American sisterhood and identity. Zina Camblin's And Her Hair Went With Her came out of the National New Play Network (NNPN), having received productions at Phoenix Theatre, New Jersey Repertory Company and Fountain Theatre (all NNPN theatres) and was read at the Unicorn in 2008.

Ahmad Marks Release of 'Curriculum' w/ Concerts at Living Room Thru 4/26
