BWW Review: SUMMER RAIN is Simply Charming Home-Grown Musical at New Theatre

It is a wonderful time of year to be reminded of the romanticism inherent in the Australian outback; a topic more frequently explored of late for links to our history, our current social climate and our connection as a nation. Summer Rain is the work of two Australian theatrical legends, Nick Enright and Terence Clark. Summer Rain is no Boy from Oz, but this production is undeniably charming, a quintessential musical, and a wonderful ode to Australia's natural treasures. Debuting as director, Trent Kidd has shown great skill with stagecraft and character development, alongside his clear choreography talents which truly thrive in Summer Rain.

BWW Review: BROKEN IS A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH OF THE OUTBACK at Eternity Playhouse

Three lives orbit each other, each on the brink of chaos in the serendipitous pursuit of rapture. Darlinghurst Theatre Company's Broken is akin to theatre heroin; powerful in its purest form capable of transfixing in some moments and transporting in others whilst maintaining a reverent potency in word and sound. Playwright Mary Anne Butler and Director Shannon Murphy didn't cook this in a bathtub, it is effective and razor-sharp. An intertwining, drain-circling tale of a car accident romance and domestic collapse in dustbowl Australia, every element from cast to homespun sound effects brought a sense of ambient pregnancy. Broken is very much a gem that too rushed a judgement will cost the flawless experience of it.

BWW Review: A MAN WITH FIVE CHILDREN at Eternity Playhouse

There is no legend, living or dead, whose art hasn't been compromised in some way by fame. Those built to last are often those who turn their creative lens onto fame itself, exorcising their demons and their reputation in pursuit of true expression. Many in the Australian theatre scene believe homegrown and widely acclaimed playwright Nick Enright was built so, and if not for his death in 2003, A Man with Five Children would be far from his final comment on fame, relationships and the Australian lower-class. Nonetheless, entering into that bare stage, lone camera and scattered chairs at Eternity Playhouse, the tragedy of Enright's passing and of the impending narrative was acute.

The Celebration Theatre's production of THE BOY FROM OZ has just opened to glowing reviews; raves and compliments Celebration's co-artistic director Michael A. Shepperd has gotten used to. BWW Review: Splashy West Coast Premiere of THE BOY FROM OZ

Once in a great while an extraordinary performer comes along, one that not only moves us, but also affects meteoric changes within our culture. Peter Allen, born Peter Woolnough in 1944 in Tenterfield, New South Wales, Australia and who died young in 1992, was one such mega-talented singer/dancer/musical composer, who appealed to a wide audience. Not at first, mind you; it took a few years in the 60s for him to realize his bisexuality and to understand who he was.
