Debussy And Friends Announced for Hoff Barthelson Faculty Concert, Today

The Hoff-Barthelson Music School Faculty Concert Series continues today, October 26, 2018, at 7:30 pm with “Debussy and Friends” – a celebration of the music of Debussy on the centenary of his death.  Claude Debussy transformed the ambiguity, audacity, and complexity of the late 19th-century French Impressionist painters and Symbolist poets into a magical, mysterious sound world that propelled music into the Modern Era. Works to be performed include Debussy's Petite Suite for 2 flutes and piano; Sonata for violin and piano, L. 148; Lia's aria from L'Enfant Prodigue; Noël des enfants qui n'ont plus de maison; Sonata for cello and piano, L. 144; Fauré's Sonata for violin and piano in A, Opus 13-1; and Lutos?awski's Grave (Metamorphoses for cello and piano 1981).

Baryshnikov Arts Center Presents Quodlibet Ensemble: Biber, Martynov + Sharlat

Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) concludes its Fall 2018 season on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at 7:30pm with Quodlibet Ensemble: Music by Biber, Martynov + Sharlat at BAC's Jerome Robbins Theater (450 W. 37th Street). Quodlibet (Latin for 'whatever pleases') Ensemble is a string chamber orchestra of some of today's most sought-after musicians who come from top string quartets as well as period and new music groups. Highlighting their musical diversity, the ensemble performs an eclectic evening of classical music that spans different time periods and styles.

ISLE OF KLEZBOS Celebrates 20th Anniversary at Joe's Pub

ISLE of KLEZBOS, the swinging all-women's klezmer sextet, will celebrate their 20th Anniversary with a special concert Isle of Klezbos: Isle of Manhattan! at Joe's Pub on Today, October 25 at 7:00 PM featuring returning guest artist Natalia Zukerman. The band and spellbinding singer-songwriter - whose father, the classical violinist Pinchas Zukerman, is the son of a Polish-born klezmer player - first melded musical minds earlier this year, exploring poignant Yiddish roots and hidden gems from vintage soundtracks, personal histories, vivid resistance narratives, and soulful sounds of liberation. Spreading joy coast to coast this anniversary year, ISLE of KLEZBOS  latest repertoire also features original klezmer bugalu (boogaloo), lesser-known bawdy traditionals, and luscious retakes on irresistible Eastern European swing and tango. Natalia brings vibrant stories and tunes from her powerful multi-media performance, "The Women Who Rode Away," including lush arrangements with backing Klezbos bandmates. LEAP Features 'Lights On Afterschool: Art Happens Here' At Bronx Museum

The history and importance of afterschool programming is the focus of a multiarts student performance, featuring students from six District 9 Bronx schools. LEAP (Learning through an Expanded Arts Program) proudly presents "Lights on Afterschool: Art Happens Here," a celebration of afterschool programming, presenting theater, choral and step performances by students from six Bronx schools. The event will be held Thursday, October 25, from 3:30 pm-6 pm, at the Bronx Museum of the Arts (1040 Grand Concourse, at 165th St.) and is open to the general public.

Calpulli Mexican Dance Company Presents 'Navidad, A Mexican-American Christmas'

Calpulli Mexican Dance Company brings its acclaimed production Boda Mexicana (Mexican Wedding) to audiences at the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture. This will be the Company's first season presented in the Bronx coinciding with its 15th anniversary. Boda Mexicana tells the story of the union of two people through Mexican songs, dances, customs, rituals and ceremonies. Two lovers travel through time to Mexican towns where we experience the customs of courtship, engagement, the ceremony, and the feast that follows. But will a curse set long before their time alter their destiny? Under Artistic Director, Alberto Lopez Herrera and Music Director, George Saenz, the company of 20 dancers, guest performers, and core of musicians take audiences on a voyage through regional and ethnic traditions guided by Calpulli's unique artistic interpretation.

Lakai Dance Theatre Presents New Work At Live Arts

Founded by McKersin Previlus, Lakai Dance Theatre presents The Block: An Afro-Musical at New York Live Arts. With influences of Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Afro-Diasporic styles, The Block takes on the realities of an inner-city life through intricate spoken word verses and musical stories. The American Museum of Natural History Announces 2018 Mead Filmmaker Award Winner

Director Christy Garland received the Margaret Mead Filmmaker Award at the 2018 Mead Awards Ceremony on Sunday, October 21, for her film What Walaa Wants, about how a young woman growing up in a refugee camp dreams of joining the Palestinian Security Forces. Garland was selected from among eleven contenders by a jury that included the award-winning documentary filmmaker Sarah Elder; director of the Academy Award-nominated The War Room (1993) Chris Hegedus; artist and anthropologist Toby Lee, who is also assistant professor of Cinema Studies at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts; Sam Pollard, a feature film and television video editor and documentary producer/director whose work includes August Wilson: The Ground On Which I Stand for PBS; and Heather Rae, an Academy Award-nominated producer whose work includes Frozen River, Netflix Originals Tallulah and Dude, I Believe in Unicorns, and The Dry Land.

Ballet Hispanico Collaborates with The Apollo for CARMEN.MAQUIA

Darrah Carr Dance Comes to Irish Arts Center

Pregones/PRTT announces Bronx encore performances of 2018 FUERZAfest play competition winner MR MR & DR DR, produced by Puerto Rican theater company Desde Alla. The show won awards for Best Production, Best Playwright, and Outstan- ding Performance. Presented in Spanish with English language supertitles, the play is written by Ian Robles, directed by Janilka Romero, and features actors Christopher Cuevas and Luis Ponce. Strictly limited engagement, only three performances: October 19-21 in The Bronx.

Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company To Join Germany/Luxembourg Choreographer Hannah Ma In Workshop And Performance At Tuchfabrik Center In Trier, Germany October 2018

Nai-Ni Chen opened her 2019 season with a theme of collaboration and outreach, especially with other diverse, immigrant women choreographers from all over the world. On October 22, Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company will conduct a weeklong residency and choreographic exchange with Germany's HannahMaDance headed by Luxembourg/Trier based choreographer Hannah Ma. During the residency, Nai-Ni Chen will be developing a new work using the music of Chinese Bamboo Rap (Kuaiban), Chinese Martial Art and Hip-Hop. A final performance of the work-in-progress, currently titled Speaking in Tongues, will be shown to the public in Germany on Sunday, October 28, 2018. String Quartet Ethel Celebrates the Circus at BAM 11/14-17

As part of the string quartet's 20th anniversary season, ETHEL returns to BAM with Circus: Wandering City, a multimedia musical journey into the history of the iconic Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus that explores and honors the complex relationship between circus troupes, their performers, and the audiences they inspired. 

Margie Gillis Is Choreographing New Work To Music Of Bach

Margie Gillis has begun to choreograph a dance on the Paul Taylor Dance Company (PTDC) to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach as a Guest Resident Choreographer of Paul Taylor American Modern Dance (PTAMD). Ms. Gillis was selected by Paul Taylor prior to his death in August. Her new work will premiere as part of Orchestra of St. Luke's Bach Festival next June, and will then be part of PTAMD's Fall Lincoln Center Season.

Flushing Town Hall Presents 4th Annual Diwali Festival

On Saturday, November 10, Flushing Town Hall will celebrate the Festival of Lights with its fourth annual Diwali Festival, this time as a Diwali Dance Party, featuring DJ Rekha and Abha Roy in a mash-up of Bhangra and Kathak music and dance styles, with cooking workshops, dance lessons, traditional foods, and family-friendly activities such as a jewelry workshop and henna painting. The event will provide a rare opportunity to see DJ Rekha perform in New York City.

C4: The Choral Composer/Conductor Collective Presents PREMIERES

C4: The Choral Composer/Conductor Collective will present Premieres: Two Choral Composition Workshop Concerts, as part of its 2018-19 season. The first Premieres concert will take place on October 13 at 8 PM at the Church of St. Luke in the Fields at 487 Hudson Street (south of Christopher Street), and the second Premieres concert will take place today, December 1, also at 8PM, at St. John in the Village Church, 218 West 11th Street (corner of West 11th Street and Waverly Place), both in Manhattan.
