Brooklyn Art Song Society Announces 2018-2019 Season

Brooklyn Art Song Society (BASS) is proud to announce its 2018-2019 season beginning in October of 2018. BASS's ninth season features all the innovative programming and world-class performers audiences have come to expect, plus some new surprises. By the numbers, season nine includes 250 songs by nearly 20 composers over 10 concerts, performed by 40 of today's top interpreters of song.

It's not just that she's marking her 90th birthday on May 27 with a concert in New York, but that the concert is showcasing a gaggle of world premieres, US premieres and NY premieres (along with more familiar works), which highlight her rich musical vocabulary and keen sense of drama.

Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival 2018 Announces 35th Anniversary Season

This summer, the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, called 'the crown jewel of chamber music festivals on Long Island – arguably anywhere on the East Coast” by Newsday last year, celebrates its 35th anniversary. A pre-festival ramp-up of five free pop-up concerts around the Hamptons sets the stage, Alan Alda returns to launch the season, hosting a musical portrait of Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn, and the festival features the world premieres of BCMF-commissioned works by Kenji Bunch and Paul Moravec.

Jory Vinikour And The Chicago Philharmonic Chamber Players Unearth Harpsichord Masterpieces In Hyde Park

The Chi Phil Chamber Players join spectacular virtuoso Jory Vinikour on May 5 2018 in a harpsichord extravaganza with musical selections from traditional Bach to Chicagoan composer William Ferris to Indiana University Jacobs School of Music professor Juan Orrego Salas. Headlining the program is a rare performance and Chicago premiere of 20th century Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ned Rorem's Concertino da Camera. This piece, which was written in 1946 in the early stages of Rorem's prolific career, was thought long-lost until it resurfaced and was heard publicly at the University of Minnesota for the first time in 1993. Vinikour, known for his "spectacular displays of virtuosity and subtle dramatic expression" (Bachtrack, 2011), brings Rorem's work to life as deftly as he performs works by well-known masters.

Bloomingdale School Of Music Presents THE LYRICAL BRAHMS, Today

Bloomingdale School of Music (BSM) continues its focus on faculty performances with pianist Judith Olson and guest artist Rolf Schulte on violin in a concert entitled, The Lyrical Brahms on today, April 27th at 7:00 pm. This free concert will be held at the school's home site located at 323 West 108th Street in Manhattan. Seating is limited.

The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra Winners Of National Young Composers Competition Announced

For the second year, The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra (PYO) conducted a nationwide search to name the three winners in the PYO Young Composers Competition. There were 54 entries by composers ages 18 to 22 who submitted original orchestral scores. The winners were selected by PYO's music director, Maestro Louis Scaglione, and the director of the Young Composers Competition, Sheridan Seyfried, who is a Philadelphia-based composer, and a PYO alumnus as well as a graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music where he studied with Richard Danielpour, Jennifer Higdon and Ned Rorem.

Tippet Rise Art Center Announces Programs For Its Third Concert Season

Tippet Rise Art Center, set on a 10,260-acre working ranch at the foot of Montana's Beartooth Mountains, today announced the programs for its third concert season, comprising more than 25 recitals and chamber music concerts from July 6 through September 8, 2018. Bringing together an international roster of celebrated artists-some who have already made the art center one of their summer homes, others who will be marking their debuts at Tippet Rise, this third season will include extraordinary concentrations of masterworks by Johann Sebastian Bach and of varied and exciting compositions from the 20th and 21st centuries. Other programs will feature immersions into the Romantic repertoire-one of the hallmarks of Tippet Rise-and the world premiere of a new piece by Aaron Jay Kernis, commissioned by Tippet Rise and performed by the Borromeo String Quartet.

NYFOS presents PROTEST at Merkin Concert Hall 2/27

A cast of young, diverse and brilliant singers that includes Mikaela Bennett who just wowed the world in Michael Gordon's opera Acquanetta at the Protoype Festival performs songs by a panorama of composers, from Marc Blitzstein and Joni Mitchell to Randy Newman and Mohammed Fairouz. The Manhattan Association of Cabarets (MAC) will present Tony nominee SHARON McNIGHT and RUBY RIMS with its 2018 Lifetime Achievement Awards at the 32nd Annual MAC Awards to be held Tuesday, March 27 at 7:00 pm at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in New York City.

Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival's Spring Series Presents Three Concerts March-May

The fourth year of BCMF Spring, the spring series of the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, presents three concerts featuring favorite BCMF musicians, both veteran and recent, and the acclaimed Pacifica Quartet performing some treasures of the chamber music repertoire. Introduced in 2015 as a two-concert series, BCMF Spring has proved a successful expansion of Long Island's longest-running summer classical music festival, and a welcomed addition to the cultural offerings of the East End.

BWW Review: Vive L'ENFANT! From Juilliard's Troops with Conductor Villaume at Alice Tully Hall

The Juilliard Orchestra and Opera beat the Met to the punch this week, featuring French conductor Emmanuel Villaume in a superb concert of Ravel and Debussy, including a lovely performance of Ravel's short opera, L'ENFANT ET LES SORTILEGES, with its clever libretto by the French novelist, Colette. It took place just the night before he was announced to be taking on the premiere of the Met's new TOSCA--left empty when the opera company suspended its former music director James Levine after he was charged with sexual improprieties with minors.

New York City Opera to Present Dominick Argento's 90th Birthday Concert

New York City Opera will honor the 90th birthday of Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Dominick Argento with a concert featuring two of his one-act operas on November 9, 2017 at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall. Soprano Heather Buck will perform Miss Havisham's Wedding Night and baritone Aaron Engebreth will sing A Water Bird Talk with Gil Rose conducting the New York City Opera Orchestra.

The Dessoff Choirs Announces its Annual Holiday Concert Series

Hailed as one of the great amateur choruses of our time (New York Today) for its full-bodied sound and suppleness (The New York Times), The Dessoff Choirs celebrates the holiday season with a trio of festive concerts. Now in its 93rd year, The Dessoff Choirs continues to wow audiences with its seasonal repertoire and contemporary arrangement of carols performed in some of New York City's most beautiful churches. This season's offerings include a sing-in of Handel's Messiah (the quintessential classical music highpoint of the Christmas season), Bernstein's Simchu na celebrating the start of Hanukkah, and works by New York City-based composers: Ola Gjeilo, Nancy Wertsch, Gregg Smith, and James Bassi to name a few.

Announcing Lincoln Center's White Light Festival 2017

Ehrenkranz Artistic Director Jane Moss today announced Lincoln Center's 2017 White Light Festival, which runs from October 18 through November 15. With more than 35 events presented in 13 venues throughout the city, including U.S. and New York premieres and nine commissions, the eighth annual international festival will explore transcendence, interior illumination, and faith in the human spirit, as exhibited through artistic expression across continents and centuries. The multidisciplinary festival takes its name from a quotation by Estonian composer Arvo Part: "Icouldcomparemymusic to white light, which contains all colors. Only a prism can divide the colors and make them appear; this prism could be the spirit of the listener."
