From Sunday, June 3 through Friday, June 22, 2018, conductor Michael Christie will lead the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in the world premiere performances of An American Soldier, the new two-act opera by Huang Ruo and Henry David Hwang, at the Loretto-Hilton Center (130 Edgar Road). Tenor Andrew Stenson (Danny Chen), mezzo-soprano Mika Shigematsu (Mother Chen), and soprano Kathleen Kim (Josephine Young) make debuts with OTSL and join bass-baritone Wayne Tigges (Sergeant Aaron Marcum) and director Matthew Ozawa for this production.
In 1990, the Long Beach Playhouse established the New Works Festival to encourage playwrights to submit their unproduced works for consideration in an annual competition. Now, 28 years later literally thousands of individuals have submitted their plays for consideration and the New Works Festival enjoys a solid reputation as an opportunity for a playwright to have his or her work considered for a prize and a staged reading that includes a moderated talkback with the audience and critiques from theater professionals.

Opened in 1963, the upstairs theatre has become the place audiences can come to see contemporary and more avant garde productions. The Studio's proscenium stage in the 98-seat theatre feels intimate and inviting. And although it's a smaller space no less attention is given to the quality of its productions.
All Our Exes Live In Texas will be headlining an upcoming US tour, announced today, as their return to North America. This follows the group's winning of the 2017 ARIA—effectively Australia's Grammy—for Best Roots & Blues Album, as well as their appearance on Kesha's megahit 'Praying.' Last summer, at a Sydney recording session with Ryan Lewis and Ben Abraham, All Our Exes Live in Texas—the four Australian vocalist-instrumentalists Elana Stone(accordion), Katie Wighton (guitar), Hannah Crofts (ukulele), and Georgia Mooney (mandolin)—laid down backing vocals on an unreleased Kesha song, as a favor to the producer. Little did anyone know then that this very recording would land on 'Praying' in its original form.

Peter and the Starcatcher is based on the 2004 novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. It was adapted for the stage in 2011 by Rick Elice and provides a backstory for the characters of Peter Pan. In various reviews the play is described as literate, clever, enchanting and an extraordinary coming of age story. It's a play that transcends time and one that is equally at home in Victorian times as in the 21st Century. The show premiered in California then moved to Broadway where it was nominated for several awards including a Tony for best play.
