Steps on Broadway, one of New York's premiere dance studios, has announced that the Steps Beyond Foundation, its educational and presenting program, has received non-profit status, enabling the organization to provide more services and support to the artistic community.
Steps Beyond announces another of its lively and informative Artists Talks with three 'Broadway Babies' who can rightly be called The Women of Fosse - Diane Laurenson, Dana Moore and Mimi Quillin. Laurenson and Moore have appeared in five Fosse shows between them - Sweet Charity, Chicago, Fosse, Dancin', and Big Deal, and Quillin performed in Sweet Charity and was also assistant to Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon. The Broadway veterans will share fascinating stories about the great choreographer, drawn from their personal experiences and highlighted by film clips, followed by a Q&A session and reception. Picture it: a young man from Pennsylvania trains in ballet, moves to New York, and then finds success as a musical theatre dancer. It sounds like the stuff of fairy tales, doesn't it? Well, for 22-year-old Michael McIlwee, it was reality. This young dancer from Scranton is currently serving as the dance captain for the Harbor Lights Theatre Company production of Oliver, which runs July 12-28 at Snug Harbor Music Hall in Staten Island, New York. Mr. McIlwee was kind enough to talk with me this week about his passion for dance, his dream roles, and how Harbor Lights' production of Oliver is using dance to tell the story of the Charles Dickens orphan.
