The York Mystery Plays, a medieval cycle of plays which have been performed by the people of York for hundreds of years, will return to the city this year on an epic scale from today, 2 to 27 August. As well as a cast of professional actors, over 2,500 people will be involved in the staging of this production including over 1,500 local volunteers as the two casts of community ensemble, musicians, choir and crew.
Today, 19 July, Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu visited the set of the York Mystery Plays joined by Ferdinand Kingsley, who takes the role of God and Jesus in the plays which run throughout August against the backdrop of St Mary's Abbey, York. Princess Beatrice, whose father the Duke of York is one of the Patrons of The York Mystery Plays, visited the plays costume workshop to see some of the 3,000 individual items being made and talk to some of the 60 volunteers who are helping to create the costumes, all inspired by the fashions of the 1940s and 1950s.
Ferdinand Kingsley will play both God and Jesus opposite Coronation Street villain Graeme Hawley, who takes on the role of the Devil, in the York Mystery Plays to be staged throughout August against the backdrop of the St Mary's Abbey, York. Kingsley and Hawley will be joined by over 2,500 people in the staging of what is believed to be the UK's biggest outdoor theatrical event of 2012. After last year's hugely successful run, tickets go on sale today for Damian Cruden's acclaimed production of The Railway Children which is returning to The Waterloo Station Theatre from 18 June until 4 September with press night on 28 June 2011. Award-winning designs are by Joanna Scotcher with lighting by Richard G. Jones, music by Christopher Madin and sound by Craig Vear. Casting for the 2011 production will be announced shortly. Last year's production of The Railway Children - seen by over 165,000 people at Waterloo Station - has received two 2011 Laurence Olivier Award nominations, Best Entertainment and Best Sound Design.
