The Yale School of Music opens its 2011-12 YALE IN NEW YORK concert series with a rousing evening of 20th-century vocal music from Britain, featuring two masterpieces: Benjamin Britten's beloved Serenade for tenor, horn, and strings (written for Peter Pears, Britten's partner, and the immortal horn player Dennis Brain, who requested Britten write the work) and a rare performance of William Walton's satirical mini-opera The Bear.

In remembrance and renewal, THIRTEEN'S Great Performances will broadcast A Concert for New York, performed by the New York Philharmonic on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of 9/11, led by Music Director Alan Gilbert, taped the previous night at a free concert in Avery Fisher Hall at New York's Lincoln Center. The broadcast will be hosted by NBC News special correspondent and author Tom Brokaw.

Award winning tenor Dennis McNeil was the 1993 National Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. As a leading tenor at the New York City Opera he was awarded the Richard F. Gold Career Award for his portrayal as ‘Mark' in their New York Stage Premiere of Michael Tippet's A Midsummer Marriage. He also holds first place awards from the Southern California Opera Guild and the Victor Fuchs Memorial Competition and was a recipient of the Emily Baratelli Memorial Award from the New York Opera Index. He is a Sullivan Grant Recipient as well as a recipient of a Rex Foundation Grant from the Grateful Dead. On Sunday May 22 he will completely switch gears and perform a cabaret act @ Sterling's Upstairs @ Vitello's.

Music Director Alan Gilbert, The Yoko Nagae Ceschina Chair, will conduct the New York Philharmonic in Messiaen's Couleurs de la cité céleste and Mahler's Symphony No. 5, Thursday, April 28, 2011, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 29, at 2:00 p.m., and Saturday, April 30, at 8:00 p.m. He will be joined in these concerts by pianist Emanuel Ax, who is performing his 100th concert with the New York Philharmonic on April 28, and who will play Debussy's Estampes for solo piano, and the Messiaen work with the Orchestra.
