This evening, the 2023 Helen Hayes Awards took place at The Anthem on the District Wharf, with over 1,600 theatre-makers and theatre supporters in attendance. Esteemed Washington theatre artists Naomi Jacobson, Erika Rose, Holly Twyford, and Christopher Michael Richardson hosted an evening showcasing the vibrant and diverse community of professional theatre artists in the Washington region.

The talented voice cast includes Academy Award winner Nat Faxon ('Our Flag Means Death,' 'The Connors') and Emmy Award nominee Kevin Michael Richardson ('The Simpsons,' 'Family Guy') as Frog and Toad, as well as appearances by Ron Funches ('Trolls'), Fortune Feimster ('Good Fortune,' “Kenan”), and more. Signature Theatre has announced the cast and creative team for the musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, with music & lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler.

Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination Entertainment, is one of the industry’s leading producers of event-animated films, including Despicable Me—the most successful animated franchise in cinematic history—as well as Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch and The Secret Life of Pets and Sing films.

Nat Faxon, Chrissy Teigen, Tina Fey, Sam Richardson, Dana Carvey and Phil LaMarr will star in Mulligan, the new animated Netflix series from Robert Carlock and Sam Means, the minds behind 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Daniel Radcliffe, Ayo Edebiri, Ronny Chieng and Kevin Michael Richardson will serve as guest stars. 

What did our critic think of THE MORTIFICATION OF FOVEA MUNSON at Kennedy Center? The Mortification of Fovea Munson is a fast-paced, TYA musical based on the novel of the same name, both penned by Mary Winn Heider. The story follows Fovea, a middle schooler who just wants to find her place in the world despite her parents' owning a cadaver lab. Suddenly, when Whitney, the cadaver lab's receptionist, runs off with her boyfriend to Florida, Fovea finds herself stuck working at the cadaver lab all summer. She finds it insufferable... until three disembodied heads need to ask her for a huge favor.

Today’s subject Justin Huertas is currently living his theatre life as the composer/lyricist of Kennedy Center’s World Premiere Commission Musical The Mortification of Fovea Munson. The show begins performances March fourth and plays through the nineteenth in Kennedy Center’s Family Theater.

“LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation,” which is set after the events of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” features the voices of “Weird Al” Yankovic, Yvette Nicole Brown, Kelly Marie Tran, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, and returning cast members from previous “LEGO Star Wars” specials, and includes a new song performed by “Weird Al” Yankovic.

Also joining the cast in recurring guest roles are Ellie Kemper ('Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt') as the school librarian, Chee; Jack McBrayer ('30 Rock') as a pet kanga bird; Ryan Michelle Bathé ('The Endgame') as Barry's mom, Sierra; and Wendell Pierce ('Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan') as Barry's father, Cliff.
