New Comedy KING OF CUBA By Cristina García Opens At Berkeley City Club

King of Cuba, a new comedy by award-winning writer Cristina Garcia, opens with a press night on Saturday, July 21, and runs through August 19 (previews July 19 & 20) at the historic Berkeley City Club. The summer adventure of the Central Works 2018 season King of Cuba, is developed by Ms. Garcia in the Central Works Writers Workshop featuring the lesbian-gender-bending comedian Marga Gomez, and the Grammy-winning "bongocero" Carlos Caro. All are Cubanx celebrities living in the Bay Area. Directed by Gary Graves, the full cast includes Marco Aponte, Leticia Duarte, Elena Garrity, Marga Gomez, Ben Ortega and Steve Ortiz.

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley celebrates the holiday season with a riotous escapade, Around the World in 80 Days. Taking place in an 1870s alive with danger, romance, and comic surprises, fearless adventurer Phileas Fogg and his faithful valet circle the globe in an unheard-of 80 days. In the hilariously theatrical style of The 39 Steps, five actors portray dozens of characters in a thrilling race against time and treachery, recreating one of the greatest adventures of all time. Full of stampeding elephants, raging typhoons, and runaway trains, Around the World in 80 Days, adapted by the award-winning playwright Mark Brown, offers an imaginative and ingenious expedition for the whole family. Cal Shakes presents West Coast Premiere of BLACK ODYSSEY

California Shakespeare Theater continues its 43rd Season with the West Coast premiere of black odyssey, a thrilling and music-infused new play that mashes up Greek mythology and African-American folklore. black odyssey marks the Cal Shakes debut of Oakland native Marcus Gardley (The House That Will Not Stand at Berkeley Rep), and is only the second production ever of the play, which is being re-set in Oakland for Cal Shakes. Directed by Cal Shakes Artistic Director Eric Ting, fresh from directing Berkeley Rep's smash hit An Octoroon, the production will also feature vocal compositions by Linda Tillery and Molly Holm.

It's certainly a relevant piece for our time, and I applaud the intention of bringing it to life in this era of political debate and mistrust of the media. But if you're going to dig this one up then have the nerve to make it feel dangerously close to the outside world.
1984 Brings Dystopia to Obsidian Theater

Obsidian Theater in association with SRO Productions will stage 1984 this June at Obsidian Theater, 3522 White Oak Drive Houston, TX 77007. 1984 is an adaptation by Michael Gene Sullivan of George Orwell's masterpiece novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four. The play, which takes place in a dystopian future, revolves around the protagonist Winston Smith and his resistance to Big Brother, the Inner Party and its omnipresent government driven by surveillance, propaganda, and manipulation.
