The story is both very entertaining and very moving, and will warm the heart of everyone whose spirits were ever raised by the prospect of a victory by the underdog against all the odds. The score is a musical delight and contains one of the most poignant moments in musical theatre as Don Quixote relates his personal credo in 'The Impossible Dream'.
Show Boat, the first great serious Broadway musical, combined the talents of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. The story, which spans almost fifty years, follows the lives, loves, and losses of a troupe of riverboat performers aboard the Cotton Blossom floating theater on the mighty Mississippi. Its timeless score contains some of the most beautiful and emotionally charged songs ever written for a musical, including 'Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man' and 'Make Believe.' "Ol' Man River", is the show's most memorable anthem about how the mighty Mississippi River, that unstoppable force of nature, is completely indifferent to human suffering.

First of all, there is the score. Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II composed an operatic masterpiece with legitimate melodies and glorious orchestrations. Listening to the score brings one back to a time when singers were sang without the luxury of a microphone and where the action alternated between comedy and tragedy, without being maudlin.

The brilliant Klea Blackhurst repeated her starring role as the saucy, wisecracking housemaid Hazel in a new musical based on Ted Key's cartoon character Hazel - best known for the 1961-66 TV sitcom of the same name. Surprise! This brand new, non-equity national tour of GUYS AND DOLLS---currently onstage at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts for a limited week-long run through April 19---is a winning, nicely-nicely done charmer. Of course, it helps a lot that this traveling production comes equipped with Broadway-caliber sets and costumes and, most satisfying of all, a really talented, engaging ensemble cast.
