BWW Review: THE MONEY FI$H

John Cox is a definite "fish-out-of-water."  A natural actor (in his late-thirties, I imagine), average-looking, with an average-build, who has eschewed an acting career to continuing working his blue-collar interests, he has written and stars in an absorbing 85-minute intimate history of his three years on a fishing boat in Alaska's Bering Sea, out of the port of Dutch Harbor.

THE MONEY FI$H Extends at the Hudson Theatres

The Money Fi$h has been extended through Dec. 20: The true story of one man's harrowing experience as a commercial fisherman on the Bering Sea. Michael Arabian (Waiting for Godot) directs writer/performer John Cox in his gripping tale of the search for fortune and adventure that propelled him from Airborne Army Ranger to Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Hell isn't hot. Hell is freezing cold, wet - and stinks like fish.

THE MONEY FISH Runs Now thru 11/22 at the Hudson

Sometimes you have to journey to the end of the world to find yourself. Michael Arabian directs writer/performer John Cox in The Money Fi$h, an unforgettable true story opening tonight, October 1 at the Hudson Theatres in Hollywood.

Classical Theatre Lab to Present A FAMILY AFFAIR, Begin. 7/19

The Classical Theatre Lab and the City of West Hollywood present A Family Affair by Alexander Ostrovsky, adapted from a translation by Geroge R. Noyes, directed by Mel Green. Causing an uproar when published in 1850, this broad and irreverent Russian comedy of manners centers around a greedy merchant, Bolshov, who makes a fraudulent bankruptcy application in order to finance the lavish lifestyle of his bourgeois husband-hunting daughter. When Bolshov's accomplices run off with his assets and his daughter, he descends into professional and psychological ruin and is jailed. Upon his release, Bolshov, a new man ready to walk the straight and narrow, finds that his selfish and cantankerous family has not changed one bit.

BWW Reviews: Film Legend Leslie Caron Graces the Laguna Playhouse Stage

Two character plays about love and friendship over time like Same Time, Next Year by Bernard Slade and Driving Miss Daisy by Alfred Uhry are A-list treasures. Their lack of pretension and real humanity make them linger quite joyously in the mind. In spite of some wonderful moments, Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks by Richard Alfieri is not quite at that level. As in a sitcom, many of the reactions are too quick and ready-made...and the outcome relies heavily on illness and sympathy to keep the two characters connected; but despite its flaws, the play is enormously entertaining and appealing in the right hands. What makes the current Laguna Playhouse production so memorable is the pairing of film legend Leslie Caron with 6-time Ovation Award winner David Engel, both known for their superior reliability with a dance step or two.
