It's always hard for me to come up with the best of anything in entertainment. With my backstage theatre background, I'm obsessed with detail, and I can't simply sit back and enjoy any show. As a writer, I'm obsessed with the words, the sentence, the grammar, etc., and I can never read strictly for pleasure. In the pressure cooker of coming up with the best picks for 2012, I have a mixed pot.

All events are at the Don & Ann Brown Theatre (201 Clematis Street).

Westport Country Playhouse Presents Author John L. Lock Tonight, 7/24

John L. Locke, Ph.D., author of books on gossip, eavesdropping, and other aspects of human communication, will speak at "Books Worth Talking About," tonight, July 24, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the Lucille Lortel White Barn Center at Westport Country Playhouse, followed by an 8 p.m. performance of Moliere's timeless comedy, "Tartuffe."

Westport Country Playhouse stages the National Book Award-winning memoir, "The Year of Magical Thinking" by Joan Didion, now through June 30, featuring noted actress Maureen Anderman as Didion. Directed by Nicholas Martin, the play is based on the author's actual experience rebuilding her life during the year after her spouse's death and her capacity to emerge strengthened from even the most shattering of life's trials. Westport Country Playhouse Welcomes Author Joan Didion Today, 6/17

Joan Didion will be a guest at a Westport Country Playhouse Sunday Symposium today, June 17, following the 3 p.m. matinee performance of Ms. Didion's play, "The Year of Magical Thinking," based on her 2005 National Book Award-winning memoir. She will converse on the Playhouse stage with David Kennedy, Playhouse associate artistic director. Following the symposium, Ms. Didion will sign copies of her books which will be available for purchase.
