The Music Center welcomes one of America's most popular dance companies, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, back to Los Angeles with the dance company's 60th anniversary celebration tour at The Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion from April 3 - 7, 2019. Led by Artistic Director Robert Battle, Ailey's remarkable dancers including Danica Paulos of Huntington Beach and Rehearsal Director and Guest Artist Matthew Rushing of Los Angeles, who has been with the Company for more than 25 years will perform four different programs of diverse repertory featuring West Coast premieres, new productions and returning classics. Part of the 2018/2019 season of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center, which is curated by The Music Center's artistic division The Music Center Arts (TMC Arts), the engagement includes four special programs: Trailblazers, featuring the West Coast premiere of Lazarus by Rennie Harris the company's first two-act ballet; Bold Visions, featuring West Coast premiere of Wayne McGregor's Kairos and the Los Angeles premiere of The Call by Ronald K. Brown, alongside Jawole Willa Jo Zollar's Shelter; a Timeless Ailey program with rarely seen gems by one of America's greatest cultural leaders; and a Musical Inspirations program featuring the Los Angeles premiere of Ailey star Jamar Roberts' Members Don't Get Weary, a new production of Robert Battle's Juba, and his tour-de-force duet Ella.
Friday, October 12, 2018 kicked off the first of two weekends of Ailey's Choreography Unlocked Festival featuring an array of panel discussions, conversations, master classes and performances. All programs and events will take place at Ailey's home at The Joan Weill Center for Dance in New York City. As part of the “Ailey Ascending” 60th anniversary year-long celebration, it honors the pioneering legacy of Mr. Alvin Ailey himself and his spirit and belief that “dance came from the people and should always be delivered back to the people.”
As part of the "Ailey Ascending" 60th Anniversary celebration, the Choreography Unlocked Festival of performance, conversation, and master classes will take place at Ailey's home across two weekends - October 12 - 14 & 26- 28. Building on the success of the New Directions Choreography Lab, created by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Artistic Director Robert Battle in 2011, the festival will elevate The Joan Weill Center for Dance's role in the community as a hub for creating and presenting new work and fostering the next generation of choreographers.
At an audition attended by 100 men held on September 2 and 3, Devon Louis and Paul Giarratano were selected by Artistic Director Designate Michael Novak to join the world-renowned Paul Taylor Dance Company.
Performed at The Ailey Citigroup Theater in Ailey's home, The Joan Weill Center for Dance, Reveal featured nine original works choreographed and performed by members of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, with a special appearance by acclaimed Guest Artist and Rehearsal Director Matthew Rushing. This summer, Ailey Extension is offering a variety of unique dance programs for young, aspiring dancers. With one or two-week performance intensives and weekly training classes taught by New York City's premiere choreographers and instructors, kids and teens can enjoy developing technique, enhancing musicality, and releasing creative expression. The one-night-only benefit performance and party featured Honorary Chair Jussie Smollett, who stars on Fox's Empire and recently released his debut album, Sum of My Music. The evening honored Vikas Kapoor and Ailey Trustee Jaishri Kapoor for their remarkable support of the Ailey organization and their dedication to Ailey's educational initiatives. Over $1 million was raised to support Ailey's extensive educational and training programs for young people, including AileyCamp and scholarships to The Ailey School.
