A tangled web of dark and complex circumstances is delivered with a mix of hysteria, confusion, accusation and cold calculation under the direction of Reg Williams at Centrestage Theatre Company's production of The Crucible which opened on Friday night.
A parable of mass hysteria that draws a chilling parallel between the Salem witch hunts of 1692 and McCarthyism, which gripped America in the 1950s, The Crucible by Arthur Miller remains eerily timely in today's climate of fake news. Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum, its own history firmly rooted in the McCarthy-era Hollywood blacklist - when actor Will Geer and his wife, Herta Ware, created the theater as a haven for blacklisted actors - opens a new production of Miller's modern classic onJune 30. Theatricum artistic director Ellen Geer, Will's daughter, is at the helm, with family members Thad Geer,Willow Geer and Melora Marshall featured in the cast.
The Crucible (1953) is a partially fictionalized narrative of the Salem witch trials which occurred in Massachusetts Bay Colony during 1692 to 1693, written by American playwright Arthur Miller.

Arthur Miller's The Crucible, written as a parable for a specific time, seems to strike such a deep and resonant chord that its themes are universal and always relevant. The historical setting is Salem, Massachusetts and the infamous 18th-century witch trials, but Miller had the 1947 House Un-American Activities Committee on his mind.
Arthur Miller's classic The Crucible remains a kind of mainstay of theater across the country from professional productions down to the myriad high school productions. But for it to ring true it must resonate with society's repeated history with mob mentality whether that be the literal Salem witch trials of the story or McCarthyism or even more recent moments in our history where truth is over shadowed by fear. And while ACT's current production of the classic nails those themes it also manages to make the production all about the stellar performances and the brilliant script than about any set or costumes or flashy presentation.
Arthur Miller's landmark play has gripped audiences for nearly 65 years, but couldn't be more timely in today's political environment. The McCarthy-era drama, set in Puritan Salem, paints a portrait of a paranoid, litigious society power-hungry and gripped by misguided moralism and predicts, among many things, the era of Donald Trump. The story focuses on a young farmer, his wife, and a young servant-girl who maliciously causes the wife's arrest for witchcraft The Crucible performs October 12th thru 22nd at the Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Avenue, Columbus, OH 43215.
