Based on a true story and set in a private girls' boarding school in New England, The Children's Hour chronicles the lives of the school's two young, ambitious owners, Karen Wright and Martha Dobie. When their disciplinary actions against troublesome student, Mary Tilford, upset her, the bratty child runs away to her influential grandmother. Constructing a lie that Karen and Martha were seen having an affair, Mary's action soon becomes more than just a simple fib, causing parents to withdraw their children from the school and the owners to question what went wrong as the women's lives are shattered.
