The Staples of Shakespeare: Gender-Bending from TWELFTH NIGHT to 'VERONA'

TWELFTH NIGHT and RICHARD III, starring the Tony-winning, incomparable Mark Rylance, have adopted a creative leniency with the characters' gender - though Shakespeare's staple to command his characters to don the garb of a member of the opposite sex, for reasons interwoven in love and lust, greed and vengeance, is a common thread running throughout his romantic repertoire.

Palm Beach Dramaworks to Present THE LION IN WINTER, Begin. 12/6

King Henry II and his estranged wife, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, are celebrating Christmas with their three sons, and you're invited to join them. But be prepared to experience duplicity, backstabbing and caustic barbs when Palm Beach Dramaworks presents James Goldman's classic comic-drama,The Lion in Winter opening on Friday, December 6 (8pm) at the Don & Ann Brown Theatre (201 Clematis Street). Performances are scheduled through January 5, with specially priced previews on December 4 and 5.

Shirley Herz Memorial Set for Samuel J Friedman Theatre, 11/4

There will be a Celebration of legendary theatrical press agent Shirley Herz, on Monday, November 4th at 1:30 pm at the Samuel J Friedman Theatre, 261 West 47th Street, NYC. Some of the participants are Jeffrey Alper, Sam Altman, Barry Brown, Jan Buttram, Robert Callely, Tyne Daly, Jane Friedman, Diane Judge, Angela Lansbury, 'Charlotte Moore, Tom Rhoads, Liz Smith, Iris Williams and La Cage aux Folles' Original cast members: Betsy Craig, Dan Grady, Cady Huffman, David Jackson, Eric Lamp, Tom Sesma & Jennifer Smith. Musical accompaniment by Mark Hummel and Don Pippin.

The Broadway community mourns the loss of celebrated theatrical publicist Shirley Herz, who passed away on Sunday at age 87. The marquees of Broadway theatres in New York will be dimmed in her memory tonight, August 14th, at exactly 8:00 p.m. for one minute.

The Broadway community mourns the loss of celebrated theatrical publicist Shirley Herz, who passed away on Sunday at age 87. The marquees of Broadway theatres in New York will be dimmed in her memory on Wednesday, August 14th, at exactly 8:00 p.m. for one minute.

Legendary Theatrical Publicist Shirley Herz Dies at 87

Shirley Herz, a legendary theatrical press agent, died on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. The cause was complications from a stroke suffered on July 18, said Sam Altman, a longtime friend.

The 2013 Honorees for Outstanding Broadway or Off-Broadway Debut Performance, the 5th Annual Dorothy Loudon Award for Excellence in the Theater for an Outstanding Performance in a Broadway or Off-Broadway Production, and the newly established John Willis Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre, were announced today. The winners will be celebrated at the 69th Annual Theatre World Awards Ceremony set for a new day and time, representing a change from past years, on Monday evening, June 3, 2013 beginning at 6:45 p.m. at the Music Box Theater (239 West 45th Street), home of the current Broadway revival of Pippin.

Following that, on January 8, will be the Southeastern premiere of The Stages of Edward Albee, the acclaimed new documentary that examines the playwright's life and work.
