Joseph V. Melillo, executive producer of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, today announced programming for the BAM 2011 Spring Season, which runs from Jan 7 through Jun 11, 2011. The season comprises eight theater, opera, and dance engagements and features BAMcinématek series, BAMcafé Live weekend music events, artist talks, visual art exhibitions, and literary events.

On Wednesday, October 6, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will launch his ninth annual 'Take Your Man to the Doctor' campaign with a press conference at Brooklyn Borough Hall. 'Take Your Man to the Doctor' is a call to action for men of all ages, ethnicities, and economic levels to regularly visit a doctor, and for the women and men who love them to help make it happen. Participating Brooklyn hospitals, clinics and healthcare professionals will offer free health screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI, cholesterol, diabetes, glucose, glaucoma and HIV, as well as podiatry and free flu shots, and make important health information available onsite from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Borough Hall Plaza. A press conference will be held at 11 a.m.

On Sunday, September 12, 2010, the fifth annual Brooklyn Book Festival, one of the top book festivals in the country, brought out thousands of book lovers to Downtown Brooklyn. With the extraordinary literary heritage, vibrant publishing community and international reading audience of Brooklyn and New York City as its backdrop, the Festival offered the best and brightest stars in contemporary literature. The fifth anniversary of the Brooklyn Book Festival will take place on Sunday, September 12, with an all-star literary lineup, including Salman Rushdie, Mary Gaitskill, Colson Whitehead, Paul Auster, Rosanne Cash, Paul Krugman, Gary Shteyngart, Francine Prose, Dennis Lehane, Jonathan Lethem, Pete Hamill, Jennifer Egan, Russell Banks, Michael Connelly, John Hodgman, Kristen Schaal, Thurston Moore, Sam Lipsyte, Sloane Crosley, Sandra Rodriguez and Paul Harding and many, many more, as well as Children's and Young Adult Lit stars like Rebecca Stead, Sara Shepard, Jacqueline Woodson, and Jon Scieszka. The Festival is a free, literary celebration featuring more than 200 national and international authors in readings and panel discussions. Each year, the Brooklyn Book Festival 'BoBi' award is given to an author who has made a broad impact on the field of literature. This year's recipient is John Ashbery, who will be honored at the Brooklyn Book Festival Gala Mingle on Saturday, September 11, 2010. The award was established in the Festival's second year. Previous BoBi recipients are Edwidge Danticat (2009), Walter Mosley (2008) and Paul Auster (2007). Ashbery will also participate in this year's Festival program, in an on-stage conversation with Paul Auster, Sunday, September 12.

Brooklyn Borough Hall Lit to Honor Mother Teresa

On Wednesday, August 25, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz welcomed Monsignor John Strynkowski (representing Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio), rector at St. James Cathedral Basilica; Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello of Mary Queen of Heaven Church; Rabbi Joseph Potasnik of the New York Board of Rabbis; members of the Catholic community; and elected officials as Brooklyn Borough Hall was lit in blue and white on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mother Teresa. BP Markowitz announced in June that Borough Hall would be illuminated in the colors of Mother Teresa's religious order after the owners of the Empire State Building stated a similar honor would not take place at New York City's tallest building.
