Bay Area Playwright Lauren Gunderson's I AND YOU Receives Mimi Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award

ATCA has named Lauren Gunderson's I and You recipient of the Harold and Mimi Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award, recognizing playwrights for scripts that premiered professionally outside New York City during 2013.

FST to Present 2014 RICHARD AND BETTY BURDICK NEW PLAY READING SERIES, 4/28-5/10

Florida Studio Theatre announces its annual Richard and Betty Burdick New Play Reading Series, which will present three new plays by contemporary American playwrights. The series will take place in the Keating Theatre on Monday, April 28 at 7:00pm, Monday, May 5 at 7:00pm, and Saturday, May 10 at 2:00pm, and is part of FST's Sarasota Festival of New Plays. Tickets for the series are 3 plays for $25, or individual play readings for $10. Additionally, FRIENDS of FST can purchase a subscription for all 3 plays for $15. Marin Theatre Company's artistic director Jasson Minadakis has announced that Lauren Gunderson's I and You, which premiered at Marin Theatre Company in October with support from the National New Play Network's Continued Life of New Plays Fund, and Martín Zimmerman's Seven Spots on the Sun, which won MTC's 2012 Sky Cooper New American Play Prize and received a public staged reading at MTC in June 2013, have been selected as finalists for the 2014 Harold and Mimi Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award.

New Chicago Artists Join the Goodman's Artistic Team for 2013-14 Playwrights Unit

A new crop of local talent joins Goodman Theatre's artistic team for the 2013/2014 Season. The four Chicago-based writers named to the fourth season of the Playwrights Unit-a year-long residency program designed to support and develop new works-include Andrew Hinderaker, Gift Theatre ensemble member; Mickle Maher, cofounder of Theater Oobleck; Anne Garcia-Romero, a resident playwright at Chicago Dramatists; and Laura Schellhardt, who oversees undergraduate playwriting at Northwestern University. A partnership with Chicago Dramatists, the Playwrights Unit meets twice per month with members of the Goodman's artistic team to discuss their plays-in-progress and provide feedback for one another. The program includes readings of the playwrights' works-in-progress at Chicago Dramatists in early 2014, and culminates in summer 2014 with staged readings of their completed works at the Goodman. Playwrights Unit alumni include Greg Allen, Alice Austen, Ike Holter and Christopher Oscar Peña (2012/2013 Season); Philip Dawkins, Nambi E. Kelley, Elaine Romero and Martin Zimmerman (2011/2012 Season); and Seth Bockley, Lisa Dillman, Laura Jacqmin and Rohina Malik (2010/2011 Season).

All five plays celebrate Latino playwrights: The Upstairs Concierge, a contemporary farce about celebrity and baseball by Pulitzer Prize finalist (for The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity) Kristoffer Diaz; and The Solid Sand Below, an examination of the intoxicating nature of war which Martin Zimmerman developed during his time as a member of the Goodman's Playwrights Unit, and which was selected for the 2013 National Playwrights Conference at The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Connecticut. I had the privilege of seeing Seven Spots on the Sun and I need to get this out of the way immediately: it was fantastic. The show was truly one of the best productions I have ever seen. Seven Spots on the Sun is a World Premiere play written by Martin Zimmerman and directed by KJ Sanchez

The Pittsburgh Dance Council, a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announced Zimmermann & de Perrot, from Switzerland, will perform at the August Wilson Center, 980 Liberty Avenue, Downtown Pittsburgh in the Cultural District, their U.S. premiere of Hans was Heiri on Wednesday, October 16th, at 8:00 p.m, Thursday, October 17th, at 8:00 p.m. and Friday, October 18th at 8:00 p.m., as part of Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts*.
