NYPL to Host Free Events Celebrating Al Hirschfeld Exhibition, 11/14 & 11/18

The New York Public Library has announced its upcoming free events celebrating its Al Hirschfeld Exhibit 'THE LINE KING'S LIBRARY' at the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. The exhibition showcases NYPL's vast collection of Hirschfeld's work on display, honoring the iconic artist's relationship with the library. The show is on view now through January 4, 2014.

There will be a memorial celebration for Paul Szilard (Dancer, Producer, Impresario and great friend to the arts) today, October 31st, 2013 at 1:30 pm at The Joyce Theater, 175 Eighth Avenue at 18th Street, NYC. There will be performances by the Martha Graham Dance Company, The Avlin Ailey American Dance Theater and Universal Ballet's Kirov Academy of Ballet; as well as reflections from some of his friends.

The new Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts is holding a Community Day celebration today, October 27, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. to celebrate the delivery of the new venue to Beverly Hills and the greater Los Angeles community. The Wallis transforms the Beverly Hills city block, facing Santa Monica Boulevard, between Crescent and Canon Drives, into the first performing arts center to be built in Beverly Hills: a vibrant arts destination and a major cultural and education hub for audiences of every age, with two distinct, elegant buildings: the renovated historic 1934 Italianate-style Beverly Hills Post Office, now the Paula Kent Meehan Historic Building, and a new, contemporary 500-seat, state-of-the-art Bram Goldsmith Theater.

There will be performances by members of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performing 'Song for You' and an excerpt from 'Cry'; students from the senior division of the Kirov Academy of Ballet performing the Adagio and Coda from 'Sleeping Beauty'; and members of the Martha Graham Dance Company performing 'Ritual to the Sun' from Acts of Light. The public is invited.

Garth Fagan Dance to Return to Joyce Theater, 11/12-17

Garth Fagan's love of strong women is front and center in "No Evidence of Failure," which receives its world premiere when Garth Fagan Dance returns to The Joyce Theater, November 12-17. The two-program season also features the world premiere of "Gin," marking Norwood Pennewell's third work for the company. The season's revivals include Fagan's 1983 classic "Easter Freeway Processional" and "Senku," whose music will be played live by concert pianist William Chapman Nyaho. Also slated for Fagan's New York season are sections from last year's hit "Lighthouse/Lightning Rod," as well as Fagan's perennial opener "Prelude: Discipline is Freedom"
