Baltimore Symphony Orchestra to Perform Halftime Show at Ravens Game Thanksgiving Night, 11/28

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and Baltimore Ravens today announced that Music Director Marin Alsop, 32 musicians and a group of OrchKids will perform at the Ravens' Thanksgiving Night home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on November 28, nationally broadcast on NBC. Marin Alsop, the Orchestra and the OrchKids, the BSO's flagship music education program serving inner-city Baltimore students, will join the Ravens Cheerleaders and Marching Band during the halftime entertainment on the field. This is the first time the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra has partnered with the Ravens and marks their first appearance at M&T Bank Stadium.

Lawrence Edelson, Producing Artistic Director of American Lyric Theater, in conjunction with Darren K. Woods, General Director of Fort Worth Opera, announced today a collaboration between the two companies on JFK (working title), a new opera by the acclaimed team of composer David T. Little and librettist Royce Vavrek.

Astrophysicist Dr. Mario Livio to Join BSO for THE PLANETS, 11/7 & 10

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is pleased to announce that internationally-known astrophysicist Dr. Mario Livio will join Music Director Marin Alsop as a special guest throughout next week's presentation of Gustav Holst's The Planets. On Thursday, November 7 and Sunday, November 10 at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, Dr. Livio will deliver a brief on-stage introduction to The Planets with supplementary images. For the Off the Cuff performances on Friday, November 8 at the Music Center at Strathmore and Saturday, November 9 at the Meyerhoff, Dr. Livio will join Maestra Alsop on stage and provide additional scientific perspectives for the audience.

Ensemble 212 to Present SONOROUS STRINGS, 11/13

Ensemble 212 presents Sonorous Strings: Orchestra Concert, the second show of its 2013-14 season on Wednesday, November 13th at 8pm. Representative of a true kaleidoscope of styles, the evening will feature music of the Baroque and Romantic eras as well as that of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Fort Worth Opera Announces Partnership with American Lyric Theater for Upcoming JFK Opera, 2016

Fort Worth Opera General Director Darren K. Woods today shared further details about the highly anticipated world premiere of the company's third commissioned opera, JFK (working title), by the sensational and highly acclaimed team of composer David T. Little and librettist Royce Vavrek. The opera, which serves as the crown jewel of Fort Worth Opera's (FWOpera's) 70th anniversary season in 2016, is the final work in three years of world premieres from the company that begin during the upcoming 2014 season. The world premiere production of JFK will take place at Fort Worth's renowned Bass Performance Hall on April 16, 2016.

Jonathan Leshnoff's MONICA SONGS Tour Opens this Sunday at U.C. Berkeley

Baltimore-based composer Jonathan Leshnoff's newest commissioned work, Monica Songs, featuring soprano Jessica Rivera and pianist Robert Spano, will receive its world premiere performance on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at U.C. Berkeley. The performance launches the five-city tour of this work, which also includes performances on Oct. 17 at Bailey Hall, Atlanta, Oct. 20 at Smothers Theatre, Malibu, Calif., Oct. 26 at Memorial Hall, Cincinnati and culminates in a performance on Oct. 29 at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, New York. Marin Alsop & Baltimore Symphony Orchestra to Present Gustav Holt's THE PLANETS, 11/7 & 10

Music Director Marin Alsop leads the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in Gustav Holst's influential work The Planets onThursday, November 7 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, November 10 at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. A women's chorus from the Baltimore Choral Arts Society will join the Orchestra from offstage to perform the tone poem's final moment, Neptune, the Mystic. Also on the program is Stravinsky's Violin Concerto, performed by Leila Josefowicz, and Leopold Stokowski's 20th century arrangement of Bach's Toccata & Fugue. Maestra Alsop kicks off the first Off the Cuff series this season with a closer look into Holst's work, exploring its present-day relevance on Friday, November 8 at 8:15 p.m. at the Music Center at Strathmore and on Saturday, November 9 at 7 p.m. at the Meyerhoff. All four concerts will feature high-definition images from space projected onto a screen suspended above the orchestra.

Marin Alsop & Baltimore Symphony Orchestra to Present WAR REQUIEM, 11/14-16

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) Music Director Marin Alsop leads the BSO and the University of Maryland Concert Choir in the centerpiece of the BSO's 2013-2014 season, Britten's War Requiem on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 8 p.m. and Friday, November 15, 2013 at 8 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 8 p.m. at the Music Center at Strathmore. The program also features soprano Tamara Wilson, tenor Nicolas Phan, bass-baritone Ryan McKinny and the Peabody Children's Chorus. Alan Gilbert Leads the NY Phil in Britten's 100th Birthday Celebration, 11/21

Music Director Alan Gilbert will lead the New York Philharmonic in a celebration of the centennial of English composer, conductor, and pianist Benjamin Britten. The program will include Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, featuring tenor Paul Appleby and Philharmonic Principal Horn Philip Myers, and Britten's Spring Symphony, with soprano Kate Royal (in her Philharmonic debut), mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke (Philharmonic subscription debut), tenor Paul Appleby, New York Choral Artists directed by Joseph Flummerfelt, and Brooklyn Youth Chorus directed by Dianne Berkun-Menaker. The concerts, which include a performance on the composer's 100th birthday, November 22, will take place Thursday, November 21, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 22 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 23 at 8:00 p.m.

The Richmond Symphony welcomes four new musicians to the 2013-2014 season! Elena Yakovleva, one year flute and piccolo; Sam Rothstein, one year bass clarinet; Esther Nahm, one year Assistant Principal Viola; andGrace Shryock, one year Assistant Principal Oboe/English Horn.

Conducting Fellow Alexandra Arrieche to Remain with BSO Through 2013-14 Season

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and the Peabody Conservatory announced today that BSO-Peabody Conducting Fellow Alexandra Arrieche will extend her appointment through the 2013-2014 season. Ms. Arrieche began her Fellowship at the start of the 2012-2013 season, receiving a full tuition scholarship to complete a one-year artist diploma program at the Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University. Now that Ms. Arrieche has completed her degree, the fellowship has been restructured to include a larger level of commitment to conducting at the BSO.

BSO Opens 2013-14 Season with Scheherazade & 1812 Overture, Sept. 20-22

Music Director Marin Alsop will lead the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade and Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture on Friday, September 20 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 22 at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, andSaturday, September 21 at 8 p.m. at the Music Center at Strathmore. Also on the program is the United States' premiere of the BSO co-commission of John Adams' Saxophone Concerto, performed by Tim McAllister.
