Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) Music Director Marin Alsop leads the BSO in a performance of Charlie Chaplin's cinematic masterpieces The Idle Class and The Kid on Thursday, January 30 and Friday, January 31 at 8 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and Saturday, February 1 at 8 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore. The evening will include screenings of Chaplin's silent films, with the BSO performing the accompanying soundtracks live, building on the two prior successful pairings of Chaplin's famed films with his original scores. Further, February 7, 2014 marks the centennial of the appearance of Chaplin's Little Tramp on the silver screen, in the Keystone Studios comedy Kid Auto Races at Venice.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has appointed Jack Fishman as its new vice president of external affairs for the BSO at Strathmore, a position he will start on January 2, 2014. Mr. Fishman brings more than 20 years of orchestral and arts management leadership experience to the BSO, most recently serving as president and CEO of the San Antonio Symphony from 2008 through 2012. He has also held leadership roles at the symphony orchestras of Long Beach (Calif.), Amarillo (Texas) and Jacksonville (Fla.). With his extensive experience in fundraising and marketing, Mr. Fishman will lead the BSO's strategy for growth as it seeks to increase its impact and presence in the Greater Washington, D.C. area.

Today, December 8 at 3:00pm, renowned violinist Philippe Quint's Quint Quintet will perform 'A Night of Tango' at Molloy College's Madison Theatre (1000 Hempstead Ave.) The Quint Quintet was founded by the four-time Grammy Award Nominated violinist in 2009. The ensemble is dedicated to exploring the music of Astor Piazzolla and Argentine Tango. The quintet will include bandoneonist JP Jofre, double bassist Pedro Giraudo, electric guitarist Claudio Ragazzi, and pianist Octavio Brunetti. Russian tango dancers Michael Nadtochi and Zoya Altmark will also appear.

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, the University of Chicago and the Harris Theater for Music and Dance will present On Grace, a work-in-progress staged performance conceived and created by renowned actress/playwright Anna Deavere Smith, in collaboration with cellist Joshua Roman. The performance will be directed by Leonard Foglia. The event is the culmination of Smith's 2014 Presidential Arts Fellowship at UChicago and the first formal collaborative arts partnership between UChicago and Harris Theater.

From Saturday, June 14 through Saturday, June 21, 2014 instrumentalists from across the country are invited to rehearse and perform side-by-side with BSO musicians and Music Director Marin Alsop in an intensive music 'fantasy' camp. The BSO's Academy Week was notably featured in The New York Times and has become a popular destination for amateur musicians from across the country. From Monday, July 7 through Saturday, July 12, 2014 instrumental and vocal music educators will take part in the first-ever week-long orchestral immersion program playing side-by-side with BSO musicians and expert faculty to improve musicianship, performance technique, conducting skills, improvisation, arranging, practice techniques and ensemble skills. A distinctive professional development program, qualifying participants in the BSO Music Educators Academy may obtain three graduate credits through the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). In the New York Philharmonic's concerts this week celebrating the centennial of English composer, conductor, and pianist Benjamin Britten, conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert, tenors Dominic Armstrong, Anthony Dean Griffey, and Michael Slattery will replace Paul Appleby, who has withdrawn due to illness. On November 21-22, 2013, Michael Slattery will make his Philharmonic debut in Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, and tenor Dominic Armstrong will make his Philharmonic debut in Britten's Spring Symphony. The concert on November 23 will feature tenor Anthony Dean Griffey in both works, and he will sing the Serenade on November 26 on a program that also includes Mozart's Symphonies Nos. 39 and 41, Jupiter.

Music Director Alan Gilbert will lead the New York Philharmonic in a celebration of the centennial of English composer, conductor, and pianist Benjamin Britten. The program will include Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, featuring tenor Paul Appleby and Philharmonic Principal Horn Philip Myers, and Britten's Spring Symphony, with soprano Kate Royal (in her Philharmonic debut), mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke (Philharmonic subscription debut), tenor Paul Appleby, New York Choral Artists directed by Joseph Flummerfelt, and Brooklyn Youth Chorus directed by Dianne Berkun-Menaker. The concerts, which include a performance on the composer's 100th birthday, November 22, will take place tonight, November 21, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 22 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 23 at 8:00 p.m.

Ensemble 212 presents Sonorous Strings: Orchestra Concert, the second show of its 2013-14 season tonight, November 13th at 8pm. Representative of a true kaleidoscope of styles, the evening will feature music of the Baroque and Romantic eras as well as that of the 20th and 21st centuries.
