Bay Area Musicals!, the newest non-profit theatrical organization to join the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area arts community, continues its inaugural season with the acclaimed tribal love-rock musical, Hair. This generation-defining musical tells the story of Vietnam-era youths awkwardly but exuberantly creating their own rite of passage through the confusion around them. Among them are Claude and Berger - a pair of friends battling against Claude's draft notice, and Sheila, who is in love with both of them, but her politically-active lifestyle leaves her little time to act on her feelings. Ultimately, Claude has to decide if the hippie life is for him or go to Vietnam. With themes of alienation and civil disobedience, Hair illustrates the 60s generation's search for meaning through various 'be-ins,' 'love-ins' and protests. The winner of the 2009 Tony Award for 'Best Revival of a Musical,' Hair features classic hits including, 'Aquarius', 'Hair', 'Going Down', 'Easy to be Hard', 'Good Morning Star Shine' and 'Flesh Failures/Let the Sun Shine.'

With the theme 'Thresholds,' the 2015 Margaret Mead Film Festival presents stories that take us across boundaries and illuminate the depth and breadth of human existence: Uruguayan ballet dancers ignite stages at home and abroad; an Austrian village becomes a model for a Chinese utopia; an Indian girl sold into marriage escapes to become a thriving businesswoman; young adults with autism in Ohio experience their first dance. Such stories are emblematic of the legacy of Margaret Mead, whose pioneering work as an anthropologist at the Museum inspires us to consider what it means to cross thresholds into new cultures today.
Since its Off-Broadway debut in 1967, HAIR has become a touchstone for musical theatre fans with a fondness for the decade's counter-culture revolution. Having won both a Tony and a Grammy, there is no doubt that this musical, which defies nearly every theatrical convention, has become as important a part of the genre's cannon as any of the Golden Age's classics. However, it is a show that I have just never 'got.' Perhaps I am too square to appreciate the flower-power sensibility, or too straight-laced to understand the era of psychedelic drugs and free love. Nonetheless, the score by Galt MacDermot (music) and James Rado and Gerome Ragni (lyrics) contains some of the theatre's best 'rock' songs with pop cross-overs 'Aquarius,' 'Good Morning Starshine,' and 'Let the Sunshine In.' Theatre UCF's production of 'The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical,' which runs through October 25th, might not have been able to make me appreciate the show's trippy conceit, but it did confirm that the program has just as much talent as nearly any of Central Florida's professional theatres.

From July 24 through 26, 2015, the Festival will feature nineteen films—from sixteen countries (and seven continents)—with filmmakers in person and live musical performances. Festival director Alan Webber said, “This year's Rural Route line-up has come together as an exceptional schedule of brand new films, in-person guests, and live music, with an emphasis on bold, independent women behind and in front of the camera (and instrument) that we're excited to showcase at Museum of the Moving Image.”
