Arthur Yorinks' AMERICAN SONG Continues at The Flea in April

The Flea Theater in association with Four Arts Media will present the next 4 plays of the AMERICAN SONG 13 play series. Following the previous four plays that brought us from the turn of the century to 1939, the upcoming presentations forge ahead through World War II and end after the cultural and political upheavals of the 1960s.

The Flea Premieres WHITE HOT by Tommy Smith, Beginning 4/26

Playwright Tommy Smith returns to The Flea and once again brings you to the brink with the New York Premiere of WHITE HOT. In her directorial debut, the production will be helmed by Flea Resident Director Courtney Ulrich starring The Bats, the resident acting company at The Flea. Previews begin April 26 with opening night slated for May 7.

A sonic reverberation of Homer's The Odyssey - filtered through the lens of downtown artist Tommy Smith - the audio-fueled 'extended play', NECTARINE EP, de-stimulates the audience's perception through visual and auditory manipulation. This experimental production is both written and directed by Tommy Smith and features The Bats, the resident acting company at The Flea. (PLEASE NOTE: This production is not open for review.)

Hamish Linklater's THE VANDAL Extends Through 3/3 at the Flea

The Flea Theater will extend the production of THE VANDAL through March 3. Hamish Linklater's playwriting debut, directed by Jim Simpson and starring Deirdre O'Connell, Zach Grenier and Noah Robbins, opened January 31.

American Lyric Theater Presents THE LIVING LIBRETTO at National Opera Center Tonight

Featuring guest actors from the Broadway and off-Broadway stage, each event is the culminating reading of extensive libretto workshops conducted for new operas currently being written by ALT Resident Artists.

Taylor Mac Stars in The Foundry's GOOD PERSON OF SZECHWAN at La MaMa, Now thru 2/24

Can we practice goodness and create a world to sustain it? This question, posed by Shen Tei, the good-hearted, penniless and cross-dressing prostitute of Bertolt Brecht's Good Person of Szechwan, is central to the work of The Foundry Theatre. The play's concerns, and the earmarks of the Foundry's new production, make it an ideal offering from the company, which is celebrated for creating memorable theatrical events while pursuing civic inquiry and social justice. The show, starring the singular Taylor Mac as Shen Tei, is directed by Lear deBessonet and features original live music by 'indie rock vaudevillians' (SPIN) Cesar Alvarez and The Lisps.

American Lyric Theater Awarded Two $15,000 Grants by OPERA America

American Lyric Theater (ALT) has been awarded two grants of $15,000 each from OPERA America's THE OPERA FUND for Repertoire Development. Announced earlier today by OPERA America, the grants are for two operas in development at ALT: La Reina by composer Jorge Sosa and librettist Laura Sosa Pedroza; and The Long Walk, by composer Jeremy Howard Beck and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann based on Brian Castner's critically acclaimed book of the same name.

The Public Theater Presents Soho Rep's Production of Nature Theater Production of OK's 'LIFE AND TIMES', Now thru 2/2

The Public Theater announced that it will present the Soho Rep production of the American premiere of the Nature Theater of Oklahoma's LIFE AND TIMES: Episodes 1-4 as a special engagement of the 2013 Under the Radar Festival. Conceived and directed by Pavol Liska and Kelly Copper, the epic serial saga LIFE AND TIMES will run tonight, January 16 through February 2, 2013. The 2013 Under the Radar Festival will run January 9 through 20, 2013 at The Public Theater at Astor Place, 425 Lafayette Street.

The Flea Theater will continue it's tradition of late-night offerings with The Shakes: Romeo and Juliet. Five teams of actors helmed by five Flea Resident Directors each perform an act from Shakespeare's most tragic love story. Cast from The Flea resident acting company, The Bats, Romeo and Juliet follows the inaugural Shakes, The Honest Whore by Thomas Dekker and Thomas Middleton. The Shakes: Romeo and Juliet will be performed in one-act installments until the play is complete.
