Tony Winner John Arnone to Design Sets for CCM's THE THREEPENNY OPERA, 2/28-3/10

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music's (CCM) year-long Kurt Weill Festival resumes this month with a dynamic new production of the iconic musical The Threepenny Opera. Composed by Kurt Weill with book and lyrics by dramatist Bertolt Brecht (adapted into English by Marc Blitzstein), The Threepenny Opera weaves the riveting tale of notorious bandit and womanizer Macheath ('Mack the Knife') and his seedy companions in London's underworld. Weill's innovative score invented a new form of musical theatre, leading the way for such shows as Chicago and Cabaret.

FST Extends LET'S TWIST AGAIN Through 2/2

Florida Studio Theatre has once again extended the run of the hit show Let's Twist Again: with the Wanderers, into its sixteenth week. This is the longest running Cabaret show in FST history. The ‘50s & ‘60s style musical revue that has kept the Goldstein Cabaret hopping since it opened on October 19. Tickets can now be purchased through February 2, 2013 online at Floridastudiotheatre.org, by phone at (941) 366-9000 or by visiting the FST Box Office at 1241 North Palm Avenue in downtown Sarasota.

Kurt Weill Foundation Expands Grant Program

The Kurt Weill Foundation for Music has announced the expansion of its Grant Program. In addition to existing categories funding performances of Weill's musical works, scholarly research, and educational initiatives directly related to Weill and Lotte Lenya, financial support will now be awarded in the same categories for projects directly related to Marc Blitzstein, including performances of his musical works. This development is a result of the Foundation's receipt of a 50% share of Blitzstein's musical and literary estate, donated by Blitzstein's nephew Stephen Davis. Blitzstein is best known for his stage works Regina and The Cradle Will Rock and for his English adaptation of Weill and Brecht's The Threepenny Opera.

Patti LuPone's FAR AWAY PLACES Album Gets 1/15 Release!

Broadway Records just announced that Patti LuPone's new live album, titled 'Far Away Places,' will be released on January 15. The album, which was recorded at LuPone's 54 Below show earlier this year, will be produced by six-time Grammy nominee, Robert Sher, who previously worked with Patti on the Gypsy 2008 Broadway Cast Recording.

Author Ethan Mordden discusses the lives and the romance of two theatre legends - actress/singer Lotte Lenya and composer Kurt Weill, the subjects of his new book, Love Song - on the latest edition of THEATER TALK, premiering at 1 a.m. tonight, October 26 (2012; early Saturday morning) on Thirteen/PBS, followed in New York City on CUNY TV* Saturday at 8:30 PM, Sunday at 12:30 PM, and Monday at 7:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 7:30 PM. The series is co-hosted by Michael Riedel of the New York Post and producer Susan Haskins.

University of Cincinnati CCM Kicks Off Yearlong Kurt Weill Festival, Oct 19

Beginning this month, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) will celebrate the iconic work and enduring legacy of composer Kurt Weill with an unprecedented series of events. Opening on Friday, Oct. 19, and running through Tuesday, March 12, CCM's Kurt Weill Festival will incorporate the renowned theatre composer into a broad range of both public performances and classroom exercises.

Hunter Foster, Jay Armstrong Johnson, and More Set for PIRATES! at the Muny

The Muny has announced principal casting for the sixth show of its 94th season, Pirates! (or, Gilbert and Sullivan Plunder'd), July 30 - August 5, directed by Gordon Greenberg and choreographed by Denis Jones. Conceived by Gordon Greenburg, Nell Benjamin and John McDaniel, Pirates! (or, Gilbert and Sullivan Plunder'd) features lyrics by W.S. Gilbert, and music by Arthur Sullivan. Revised book and lyrics are by Nell Benjamin, and music supervision, new arrangements and orchestrations are by John McDaniel.

Peter Dinklage (GAME OF THRONES) emceed a sold-out benefit for The Play Company on Monday, April 30 at the American Airlines Theatre in Manhattan. Among those who attended CABARET GOURMET 2012 were Dinklage's wife Erica Schmidt, who directed Play Co's Obie Award-winning production of Jonas Khemiri's play INVASION!, along with producer Ruth Hendel (FELA!), The Play Company's Founding Producer Kate Loewald and Executive Producer Lauren Weigel. STAGE TUBE: On This Day 5/3- LOVEMUSIK

Today in 2007, LoveMusik opened at the Biltmore Theatre (now the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre), where it ran for 60 performances. LoveMusik is a musical written by Alfred Uhry, using a selection of music by Kurt Weill. The story explores the romance and lives of Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya, based on Speak Low (When You Speak Love): The Letters of Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya. The show was directed by Harold Prince, with musical staging by Patricia Birch and starred Michael Cerveris as Kurt Weill, Donna Murphy as Lotte Lenya, David Pittu as Bertolt Brecht and John Scherer as George Davis.
