In One Woman in a Hundred (University of Illinois Press, 2013), author Mary Sue Welsh shares the remarkable biography of harpist Edna Phillips (1907-2003), who joined the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1930. Phillips was not only the Philadelphia Orchestra's first female member, but also the first woman to hold a principal position in any major orchestra in America.

The Philadelphia Orchestra, under the leadership of its Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin, today announced a partnership with iconic classical music label Deutsche Grammophon-in the form of a recording scheduled to be released in the fall of 2013. This is the Orchestra's first studio album with a major label since its recording with Deutsche Grammophon in 1997. The works will be recorded this spring in the Orchestra's home, Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center, and will feature Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, and which Leopold Stokowski premiered in the U.S. with The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1922. Stokowski also made the first American recording of this work with the ensemble in 1930. In addition to The Rite of Spring, other works include Stokowski transcriptions for full symphony orchestra of three of Bach's most famous organ works-his Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, Fugue in G minor ("Little"), and Toccata and Fugue in D minor-as well as his transcription of Stravinsky's "Pastorale".
On February 9, Newnan Theatre Company presented its 2013 Gala, NTC's celebration of its 2013/2014 season opening. Season ticket holders and guests were treated to drinks, hors d'oeuvres and desserts. The National Black Touring Circuit kicked off the Black History Month Play Festival 2013 with a special press reception in Harlem on Saturday, February 2 that featured a discussion by acclaimed poet and author Amiri Baraka on "The Meaning of Black History" and a performance by Timothy Simonson portraying Harlem legend Adam Clayton Powell from the play Adam.

The RVA Environmental Film Festival was founded in 2008 as "The Biggest Picture", Richmond's first environmental film festival. The Falls of the James Group, Sierra Club revived the event in 2011 as the RVA Environmental Film Festival. Today the mission of the festival is to bring entertaining and educational films that leave attendees with increased awareness of environmental problems faced locally as well as globally. This year's presenters of the RVA Environmental film festival include Falls of the James Group, Sierra Club, James River Green Building Council, Virginia Land Conservancy, and Enrichmond Foundation. Winifred Haun & Dancers will present a Winter Open Rehearsal on Sunday, February 24 at Intuit Dance in Oak Park. The Winter Open Rehearsal will present three works-in-progress, one each by choreographers Winifred Haun, Ayako Kato, director of Art Union Humanscape and Lizzie Leopold of the Leopold Group. This event will also include a discussion about each artist's dance making process and audience members will have a chance to respond, comment and give feedback on the new works.
The Old Globe's 100th anniversary production of the George Bernard Shaw classic Pygmalion stars Tony Award winner Robert Sean Leonard (The Invention of Love, Born Yesterday) as Professor Henry Higgins and Charlotte Parry (The Importance of Being Earnest, The Real Thing) as Eliza Doolittle. The production coincides with the 100th anniversary of Pygmalion's 1913 premiere in Vienna, Austria. Directed by Nicholas Martin (Butley, Present Laughter), Pygmalion will run on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, through Feb. 17, 2013. Hanson announced today that the Orchestra has selected Colombian-born, Vienna-trained conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada as its next Music Director. Orozco-Estrada, who will occupy the Roy and Lillie Cullen Chair, will serve as Music Director Designate during the 2013-14 season and will begin a five-year contract in the 2014-15 season. Orozco-Estrada's appointment was formally announced on the Jones Hall stage today in front of several hundred people, including the orchestra, staff, board, local media and Houston's Mayor, the Honorable Annise D. Parker. The announcement event was also streamed live over the internet.
