Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Announces Full Schedule for 2015-2016 Season

BNY Mellon Grand Classics Season Highlights: Itzhak Perlman in Cinema Serenade — The season begins with the return of perennial favorite violinist Itzhak Perlman performing music from the golden age of the Silver Screen as part of the Pittsburgh Symphony Gala, Cinema Serenade. The Performer-Composer — Forget one Composer of the Year; instead Heinz Hall will host four performer-composers — Daniil Trifonov, Conrad Tao, Stewart Copeland and Cameron Carpenter — who will present their own works with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra this year. Conductor Debuts — The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra welcomes four outstanding international conductors to the podium this season — Spain's Gustavo Gimeno, Czech Republic's Ji?í B?lohlávek, Brazil's Marcelo Lehninger and Costa Rica's Giancarlo Guerrero. “The Earth” — Following the success of “The Planets” in the 2013-2014 season, the Pittsburgh Symphony offers a stunning musical and visual journey around our home planet. Handel's Messiah and Bach's St. John Passion — Handel's much adored oratorio returns to the Heinz Hall stage for one night only this December, and Bach's St. John Passion makes its debut in Heinz Hall in a newly designed, semi-staged production in March.

The Mexican Museum to Showcase MAESTROS: 20TH CENTURY MEXICAN MASTERS, 3/13-6/28

The Mexican Museum, the premier West Coast museum of Mexican, Mexican-American, Chicano, Latin American and Latino art, culture and heritage, announces a new spring 2015 exhibition entitled 'Maestros: 20th Century Mexican Masters,' which will feature a dramatic selection of artworks from the Museum's permanent collections. The special exhibition will include the works of 30 internationally-renowned artists, beginning with the three most influential Mexican artists: Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Jose Clemente Orozco.

The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (BMCM+AC) celebrates the completion of the first phase of its renovation and expansion in downtown Asheville with the presentation of poemumbles: 30 years of Susan Weil's poem/images. Curated by Brian E. Butler, University of North Carolina Asheville Thomas Howerton Distinguished Professor of the Humanities, and Rachael Inch, Susan Weil Studio archivist and administrator, the exhibition is on view January 30 - May 23, and is accompanied by a roster of public programs. The exhibition includes over 60 of Weil's poemumbles made between 1984 and 2014. Additionally, several of her notebooks will be on display to provide a deeper look into her artistic process.

Minnesota Opera to Premiere THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, 3/7

MINNEAPOLIS (January 26, 2015) – Minnesota Opera Music Director Michael Christie leads the world premiere performances of The Manchurian Candidate, March 7–15, 2015in the Ordway Music Theater. Christie is recognized as “ … a top-notch conductor of new works …” by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Based on the novel by Richard Condon and directed by Kevin Newbury, The Manchurian Candidate traces the mysterious story of an American soldier decorated during the Korean War who is brainwashed into becoming an unwitting assassin in a conspiracy to overthrow the U.S. government. This taut and suspenseful thriller is the highly anticipated second opera by composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell, creators of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Silent Night.

Set in the rolling hills of the Italian countryside, Donizetti's timeless romantic comedy opens tonight, January 24 at the Ordway Music Theater in St. Paul for five performances. In the opera, American soprano Nicole Cabell stars as the beautiful and wealthy Adina, doggedly pursued by the love-struck Nemorino, a handsome but simple peasant sung by Italian American tenor Leonardo Capalbo.
