The 64th Annual Festival d’Aix-en-Provence Begins Today, July 5

The 64th annual Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, under the leadership of General Manager Bernard Foccroulle, will open today, July 5 and run until July 27, 2012, featuring a diverse menu of seven opera and musical theater productions, seven orchestral concerts, five solo recitals, seven intimate chamber music performances, two world music programs, and more than thirty events from the 15th annual European Academy of Music. The Festival's wide-ranging events unfold in nine extraordinary venues, many of them open-air, in and around the picturesque ancient Provencal city: castles, a cathedral, a basilica, a palace courtyard, a historical site dating back to the 11th century BC, and an 18th century theatre transformed from a «jeu de paume» court where Louis XIV played in 1660.

Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore Returns to the Met, Opening 3/5

A trio of international stars will sing the leading roles in a revival of Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore, opening March 5. Juan Diego Florez will sing his first Met performances of Nemorino, the simple country boy who falls in love with the beautiful Adina, sung by Diana Damrau in her house role debut. Mariusz Kwiecien adds a new role to his Met repertory as Belcore, Adina's posturing fiance, and Alessandro Corbelli reprises his acclaimed interpretation of Dulcamara, the traveling quack whose phony love potion creates real romantic intrigue among the three characters. Donato Renzetti returns to the Met for the first time in more than 20 years to conduct this revival of John Copley's colorful 1991 production.

The Metropolitan Opera will premiere its first new production of Verdi's Don Carlo since 1979 on Monday, November 22, with a cast that includes Roberto Alagna, Marina Poplavskaya, Simon Keenlyside, and Ferruccio Furlanetto. The new production of Verdi's monumental work, in which love, war, politics, and religion combine to tell a story that is epic in scale, will be directed by Nicholas Hytner, the artistic director of London's National Theatre, in a staging that 'reminds you it is one of the very greatest of all operas' (Guardian). All performances of Don Carlo will be conducted by Philadelphia Orchestra Music Director Designate Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who made a well-regarded Met debut last season with Carmen.
