The Met Ends Summer HD Encores Program, 7/28

Starting next month, the Met will present Summer HD Encores, a series of popular Live in HD screenings from recent seasons, featuring opera's greatest stars in productions of repertory classics. Beginning June 16 and running through July 28, six operas will be shown in more than 400 movie theaters across the United States.

KS Rudolf Mazzola Passes Away At Age 70

70 year old KS Rudolf Mazzola dies yesterday, Tuesday, 18 May 2010, in Vienna. Born in Switzerland, studied singing in Basel. He was a fellow at the Opera Studio in Zurich, first a commitment was given to St. Gallen and 1969 in Basel. In 1975 he was engaged as a soloist of the Vienna Volksoper, until he was hired in 1977 at the Vienna State Opera, where he was a longtime member of the company and the works. In addition, he has performed regularly at the Salzburg Festival, Munich, Paris, Zurich and Barcelona. In 1988 he was appointed to the Austrian Chamber singers.

Robert Barefield Joins Hartt Vocal Studies Division Faculty

The Hartt School is pleased to announce the appointment of its newest faculty member, Robert Barefield, baritone. Barefield, who will begin his appointment in Hartt's Vocal Studies Division this fall, has performed as a soloist with organizations throughout the United States and in Europe, including the New Orleans Opera, the Mississippi Symphony, the Arizona Opera, the Dorian Opera Theatre, the Central City Opera, the Ohio Light Opera, and Operafestival di Roma in Italy.

Alban Berg's modernist masterpiece Lulu returns to the Met, starring Marlis Petersen as the scandalous femme fatale and conducted by the Met's newly appointed Principal Guest Conductor Fabio Luisi.

Calloway, White et al. Garner '10 MAC Award Noms.; Uggams Honored, McNight Hosts 5/4

The Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs has announced the nominees for the 2010 24th Annual MAC Awards. The ceremony honoring the nominees, will take place on May 4, 2010 at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill, and will be hosted by Sharon McNight. Leslie Uggams will be honored for Lifetime Achievement, with Board of Directors Awards being presented to Peter Leavy and playbill.com. The event will begin at 7:30pm. Doors open at 6:00pm. Lennie Watts will direct the evening, with Tracy Stark musical directing.

NY Choral Society Presents Mozart's Requiem & Bernstein's Chichester Psalms at Carnegie Hall, 5/1

The New York Choral Society closes its 51st season with a performance of Mozart's Requiem, Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, and James DeMars' Tito's Say, on May 1, 2010 at Carnegie Hall, 8:00 PM. The esteemed chorus performs with the Brooklyn Philharmonic under the baton of NYCS Music Director John Daly Goodwin, alongside soloists Joyce El Khoury, soprano, Elizabeth Batton, mezzo-soprano, Michele Angelini, tenor, and Daniel Mobbs, bass-baritone.

Kate Aldrich will sing the title role of Carmen on April 28 and May 1, replacing Angela Gheorghiu who has withdrawn from those performances. Gheorghiu issued the following statement: 'To make so important a debut as Carmen, I want to be as prepared dramatically as I am musically. Therefore, I will postpone my role debut until a later date when I can work intensely with the Richard Eyre production.'
